JIMMIE DALE MAYO, "Coach Mayo" won his last
game and victoriously went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 19,
2010. Husband of Lizabethe "Libby" Stephens Mayo, he was born February 4,
1935, in Wayne County, W.Va., to Everett Tylor "ET" and Olive Lucille Flora
Mayo. A 1953 graduate of Vinson High School, he played and lettered in
football, basketball and baseball and was a member of the 1950, 1951 Class A
State Championship football teams. During his mid-20s, Jim coached junior
high football at Vinson and was a graduate assistant coach at Marshall from
1963 to 1964. After earning a bachelor's degree in education from Marshall
University in 1965, he began coaching and teaching at Fairland High School
until 1978. While at Fairland, he started wrestling, track and golf teams
and began a weight lifting program, created the Varsity "F" Club, and a
chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. As Fairland's head football
coach, he won five OVC championships, 1967 (the first in the school's
history), 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975. He was also an Assistant Coach at the
Ohio North-South All Star Game in 1975. The present football stadium, field
and track were constructed while he was at Fairland. The Fairland Football
Stadium was renamed "Jim Mayo Stadium" on October 9, 2009. Jim was also
honored with a "KEY" to Lawrence County by the County Commissioners, who
officially declared October 9 "Jim Mayo Day" for all time. During his tenure
at Fairland, he was assistant principal, teacher and coached football,
track, wrestling and golf. His real love was coaching football and sharing
his passion for Christ with his players. He led by example, stressing
integrity, honesty and his love for the Lord and family, both on- and off-
the field. At age 16, Jim began an ironworking career that lasted 30 years
with Ironworkers Union Local 769. In the summer of 1983, Jim re-entered the
profession he loved dearly -- coaching football at South Point High School.
Coach Mayo retired from education in 1999 after 30 years, but he never
retired from serving the Lord. Throughout his courageous battle with cancer
he never ceased witnessing for his beloved Jesus nor ceased touching lives.
Jim impacted everyone he met with his gift of gab, love of people,
infectious personality, and devotion to his Lord and Savior. He cherished
the friendships he maintained with previous coaches, players, co-workers and
students, with whom he shared much love and respect. Coach Mayo will be
deeply missed by all those who had the honor and privilege of knowing him.
