CHARLES WALTER "BUCK" PRESTON, 74, of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 2010, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, W.Va., by Brother Wilmer Napier, Brother Robert Wilson and Brother Buster Maynard. Burial will follow at the Preston Cemetery at Dunlow, W.Va. He was born November 7, 1936 at Dunlow, a son of the late Henry and Zella Gillispie Preston. Buck was a retired construction worker and member of Laborers' Local 543 and the W.Va. Department of Highways at Wayne. He was a member of the Rush Branch Church and a member of Vinson Lodge No. 66 at Fort Gay, W.Va., whose members will conduct graveside rites. Two brothers-in-law, Nathan Queen and Luther Lovins, also preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Betty Dingess Preston; a son, Charles "Ronnie" Preston and wife, Betty, of Wayne, W.Va.; a step-son, Bryan Maynard and wife, Bonnie, of Lavalette, W.Va.; a granddaughter, Lori Staley and husband, Aaron; a step-grandson, Jacob Tyler Maynard; a great-grandson, Eli Staley; three sisters, Margie Lovins of Georgia, Ann Queen and Barbara Carroll and husband, Selvin, of Wayne, W.Va.; five nieces, Diane Steele, Cindy Smith, Melanie Maynard, Linda Napier and Susan Bowman; and a nephew, Randy Queen. ELEANOR HOLLAND ROSS, 82, of Lavalette, formerly of Kenova, beloved wife and loving mother, passed away peacefully to her eternal home on Thursday, December 2, 2010, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. She was born January 5, 1928 in Wayne Co., a daughter of the late Mack and Marie Kelly Holland. Eleanor leaves behind her loving husband of 62 years, Taylor Ross; four daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce (Walter) Ekers, Neacie (Harry) Marks, Debbie (Nelson) Roller and Connie (Tony) Poston; three grandsons, who she adored, Christopher and his wife, Kaitlin, Brandon and T. J.; one special granddaughter, Krystal (Jeremy) Barker; one great-granddaughter, Kyleah Poston; and two brothers, Butch and Dean Holland. Eleanor was a member of the 20th Street Baptist Church in Kenova. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Genevieve, Deloris and Betty, and two brothers, Howard and Glen Holland. The family would like to thank a special neighbor, Mary Johnson and Latricia Wooten, who was like Eleanor's other daughter; and a special friend, Juanita Ferguson. MELVA MAE STEELE, 68, of Wayne, W.Va., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 2, 2010. She was born November 28, 1942 in Logan County, a daughter of the late John and Matilda Lambert. Her husband, Emery Steele also preceded her in death along ith one daughter, Linda Sue Steele, and three sons, Emery Steele, Jr., Larry Joe Steele, and an infant son. Melva dearly loved Gethsemane United Baptist Church where she attended when able. Survivors include four daughters, Ruby Adkins and husband Toby of Prichard, W.Va., Anita Suzette Willis and husband Christopher of Lakeland, Fla., Frances Davis and husband Jay of Branchland, W.Va., and Kathleen Witt of Wayne; one son, Frank Edward Steele and wife. BETTY JANE McCONNELL JORDAN, 91, of Kenova, W.Va., devoted wife and mother, died Thursday, December 2, 2010, at Community Hospice in Ashland, Ky. She was born January 28, 1919 in Cabell Co., a daughter of the late Max and Mabel Radar McConnell. Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kenova where she was a former Sunday school teacher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cortland A. Jordan; one son, Allen C. Jordan and one brother, Charles (Chuck) McConnell. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin R. and Judy Jordan of Ceredo and Steve and Linda Jordan of Kenova; one brother, Bobby Mac McConnell and his wife, Darlene of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Rita McConnell of Covington, Ky.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a special friend, Cynthia Hite Stewart. EMILEY FAYE WORKMAN STALEY, 77, of Kenova, W.Va., died Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at her home. She was born Dec. 20, 1932, in Wayne County, a daughter of the late Willard and Mary Brooks Workman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Quin Staley; one sister and one brother. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Linda Kimberlin of Prichard and Floyd and Alice Staley of Santa Monica, Calif.; nine daughters, Lucille (Roger) Parsons of Wayne, Mary (Howard) Payette of Orville, Ohio, Janet (Jim) Coffee of Summit, Ky., Dorothy (Jim) Smith of Kenova, Betty (Brian) Watts of West Salem, Ohio, Glenda and her fiancé David Blanton of Kenova, Heidy (Michael) Bailey of Kenova, Drema Reynolds of Ceredo and Kay Staley of California; one brother, Tex Workman; three sisters, Ruby Carter, Linda Oldenburg and Betty Harmon; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. HENRIETTA "NUT" MAYNARD BURKE, 71, of Norwalk, Ohio, died Friday December 3, 2010, at Fisher-Titus Medical Center, Norwalk, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, December 6, 2010, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Fred Ferguson. Burial will follow at Greasy Ridge Cemetery. She was born May 1, 1939, in Dunlow, W.Va., a daughter of the late Archie and Hercie Maynard. Henrietta was a homemaker. Her mother-in-law, Malinda Burke also preceded her in death, along with her father-in-law, Elliott Burke. Survivors include her loving husband of 52 years, Richard Burke; a son, Richard A. BENNIE LEMASTER, 59, of Kenova, W.Va., died Saturday, December 4, 2010, at his home. He was born January 26, 1951, in Louisa, Ky., a son of the late  Herbert and Ruth Craycraft LeMaster. He had been employed as a deck hand for Merdie Boggs. He attended the Park Circle Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one baby sister, Little Ruth LeMaster and one brother, Charles LeMaster. He is survived by his wife, Karen Holland LeMaster; one son, Danny LeMaster of Lincoln, Ill.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Jack LeMaster of Ceredo, W.Va., and Herbert and Chevelle LeMaster of Elliot Co., Kentucky; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Myrtle and Elgin Ward of Ceredo, Stella and Herbert Hundley of Wayne, W.Va., Janice and Larry Garrett of Portsmouth, Va., and Martha and Ray Fannin of Martha, Ky.; a special nephew, Bobby Pelfrey, several other nieces and nephews; and his loyal dogs, Maya, Dottie and Maggie. ELENA CHAFIN, 91, formerly of Huntington, W.Va., died Dec. 5, 2010 in Killeen, Texas. She was born on Nov. 25, 1919 to Roosevelt and Essie Marcum at Low Gap, W.Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Arlen Troy Chafin; daughter, Janet Arlene; brothers, Edward and Romey Marcum. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Elinor Pinson and husband, Mike; two sons, Arlen Barry Chafin and Gary David Chafin and wife, Cheryl; grandchildren, Susan, Marcia, Laura, Thomas and Melissa; great-grandchildren, J.W., Maggie, Carter, Rachel and Alexander. MAXINE ELAINE PERRY, 91, of Genoa, WV, passed away Sunday, December 5, 2010 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, WV. Funeral services were conducted at p.m. Tuesday, December 7; 2010 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, WV, by Minister Jesse Perry. Burial followed at the John Perry Cemetery at Radnor, WV. She was born March 2:2, 1919 at Grey Eagle, WV, a daughter of the la'te Thomas and Ida May Fitzpatrick Williamson. She taught school at Lycan's Ridge Elementary School and was a retired clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of the Genoa Church of Christ and Eastern Star. An infant son, John Thomas Perry, three sisters, Nell Copley, Carrie Puckett, and Thelma Varner, and two brothers, Earsel Williamson and Okey Williamson, also preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter,: Mary Sword and husband, Larry of Genoa, WV; three sons, Okey Perry and wife, Christene, and Harry "Butch" Perry and wife, Pam, all of Genoa, WV, and Ed Perry and Barb Trogdon of Wayne, WV; a sister, Ruth Marcum of Kentucky; nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; a special friend, Carroll Osburn and her caregiver, Monica Perry. NOVAL A. SMITH
, 96, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away at his home Monday, December 6, 2010 from complications of surgery. Noval was born in 1914 in Wayne, West Virginia. He earned his Masters in Education from Marshall University and served in the Army Air Corps and the Civilian Conservation Corp before marrying and beginning a long and successful career in public education. He was principal of Crum and Fort Gay High Schools and also taught high school English and economic geography at Wayne High School. In 1957, he and his family moved to Pinellas County, where he taught political science at St. Petersburg Junior College (now St. Pete College) for 25 years, before retiring in 1982. Noval was a voracious reader and continued to learn throughout his life. In addition to his family, he loved nature and trains, and he and his wife tray,eled extensively throughout the U.S. while maintaining a summer residence in the mountains of southern Colorado. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Palmaneda B. Smith, St. Petersburg; son, Noval A. Smith, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Sheryl Smith, of Richmond, Virginia; daughter, Elaine Gibson, of St. Petersburg, Florida; grandson James Noval Smith, and his wife, Kari, of Boston, MA; granddaughter Joy Patton and son-in-law James Patton, of Richmond, and their three children, Nicolas, Thomas and Ginger. A celebration of Noval's life will be held in Wayne, WV at Morris Funeral Home on May 21, 2011, followed by interment at Elmwood Cemetery, Wayne. ROYAL GENE THACKER, 80, of Pompano Beach, Fla., formerly of Huntington, W.Va., passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2010, at the Holy Cross Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Reger Funeral Chapel by Rev. Carl Lilly. Burial will follow at Spring Valley Memory Gardens. Military rites will be conducted by Veterans Honor Guard. Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army with 27 years and the recipient of the Bronze Star, having served in the Korean War and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was the owner and operator of Syndor RTE Distribution. Gene was born on August 27, 1930, in Huntington, the son of the late Thurman and Alma Barnett Thacker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Bradley Gene and Jeffrey Alan Thacker, one brother, Donald G. Thacker and one sister, Geraline Holly. He was born October 2, 1937, in Wayne, W.Va., to the late John Wesley and Delcie Jackson Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother. ROBERT E. BOLTON, 83, of Kenova, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, December 11, 2010, at his residence. Gravesite rites will be conducted 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at Maple Hill Cemetery. Robert was born October 9, 1927, in Forest Hill, W.Va., son of the late James Dean and Lena Blanche Flanagan Bolton. He was a former production supervisor with Novamont and a veteran having served with the U.S. Marines. Robert was a member of the Spring Valley Presbyterian Church; Buena Vista Lodge #60 AF&AM, whose members will conduct graveside rites; Whites Creek Chapter #159 Order of the Eastern Star; 32nd Degree KCCH in Huntington Scottish Rite Bodies; Disabled American Veterans; American Legion Post #93, whose Honor Guard will conduct graveside rites; and Huntington Chapter Marine Corps League. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife Mary Ellen Taylor Bolton and his second wife Joyce Ann Adkins Bolton. LINDA GALE ST. CLAIR, 62, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away on Sunday, December 12, 2010, at The Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at the Ceredo Church of Christ by Minister David Roach. Burial will follow at the Haynie Family Cemetery. Linda was born on July 17, 1948, in Huntington, W.Va., the daughter of Mary Louise Hunt Bentley and the late Merlin Curtis Bentley. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her son, Troy Allen Haynie. On April 14, 1963 with her three children joining her in baptism, Helen made a decision to accept Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. December 14, 2010 she went home to that beautiful place, Heaven, to join her Lord and her late husband of 53 years, Herbert Dale Stephens, Sr. At home with her loved ones and friends close by, HELEN WAUGH STEPHENS, 83, completed her earthly life and Heaven surely gained an angel. Helen was born November 26, 1927 to the late C. W. "Pete" and Ruby Waugh. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Mills and two brothers, John Edward and Charles "Newt" Waugh. Helen was a board member for 20 years of The Wayne County Public Library and a volunteer for the summer reading and craft programs. She served her communities in many ways with her most favorite being "The" seamstress for the Big Green and White Band of Ceredo-Kenova High School. FLORA W. BROWN, 78, of Ceredo, W.Va., died Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at King's Daughters Medical Center, Ashland, Ky. She was born April 14, 1932, in Huntington, W.Va., to the late Virgil George Washington Runyon and Rosena Gue Cochrun. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband Conrad Brown. She worked for 28 years at the Western Electric Company in Columbus, Ohio, where she retired in 1988. She was a member of the Ceredo United Methodist Church. She enjoyed "spending time with the girls" at the Westmoreland Senior Center and playing Bingo. Survivors include two daughters, Brenda (Donald) Sherwood of New York, and Rebecca Wallace of Columbus, along with a son, Michael Wallace of Florida. In addition to her children, she is survived by five sisters, Ginger, Phyllis, Debbie, Dinah and Lisa, along with a brother Woody; six grandchildren, Melissa (Jon) Sherwood, Bryan (Jamie) Sherwood, Jennifer (David) Gray, Nicholas, Joseph, and Jonathan Wallace; along with 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter Vickie Wallace. HOMER CHRISTIAN of Ceredo, W.Va., left his earthly home Wednesday, December 29, 2010. He was born September 4, 1918 in Sydney, W.Va., a son of the late Alvis and Sadie Webb Christian. In addition to his parents, Homer was preceded in death by one brother, Alvis Christian Jr. Homer is survived by his wife of 72 years, Tennie Noe Christian; their two children, Alfredia Chafin and her husband Robert G. of Kenova, W.Va., and John Homer Christian and his wife Barbara of Ceredo. He was also the proud grandfather of five grandsons, Robert Bevin (Beth) Chafin, John Andrew (June) Christian, Brian Nebert (Melissa) Christian, Rev. Matthew Wayne (Quintessance) Christian and Mark Alvis (Lynn) Christian. He was a proud great-grandfather of two great-granddaughters, Katie and Hollie Christian and one great-grandson, Robert Lyle Chafin. Dad was a member of, and attended First Baptist Church Ceredo. He retired from Blacktop Industries in Kenova. He was an honest, good and humble man and he and mother loved each other and their family. Dad will be sadly missed by his family and all that knew him. The life of JESS SCOTT "COACH" JARRELL came to an abrupt and tragic end December 31, 2010. He passed away at his hilltop home in the town of Wayne, W.Va., at the age of 73. Born and raised on Horse Creek, in Raleigh County, W.Va., Mr. Jarrell attended Marsh Fork High School, in the town of Montcoal, W.Va.. He initially attended Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston) on a football scholarship, but later took his talents to Marshall University to play for the Thundering Herd. Upon his graduation, he successfully pursued a Master's degree while teaching and coaching at Wayne High School. He remained at Wayne High as Head Football Coach and Guidance Counselor until his retirement in 1984. Mr. Jarrell is the second-winningest coach in school history. However, "Coach" is perhaps best remembered as a lifelong mentor and friend to his former players and students. He was the son of the late Sid and Bertie Jarrell (nee Miller). He was preceded in death by his brothers Marshall, William J., Lemmie L., Sydney J., and Curtis N., and his sisters Mabel Wills and Linda Peters. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Carol S. Jarrell of Wayne; three sisters, Lora Lyons, Anna Jarrell, and Beulah Jarrell; and one brother Virgil; three children, Rachel Bartram, Sara Morrison and husband Paul, and Jess Scott Jarrell II; five grandchildren, Jack Dolance, Nick Dolance, Allison Bartram, and Trevor and Hunter Morrison; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Jarrell's character was exceeded only by his generosity and his extraordinary love for his family. His family was his life, and his life will continue on in the memory of his family forever.
