BETTY SUE ADKINS, 76, of Huntington, W.Va., formerly of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Friday, July 1, 2011, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. She was born Nov. 23, 1934, at Wayne, W.Va., a daughter of the late Edwin Maxwell and Brooke Preston Booton. A son, Duane Adkins, also preceded her in death. She was known in the area as a former co-owner of Adkins Grocery in Wayne for over 40 years. Betty is survived by her husband, Vernon Asbury "Tom" Adkins; three sons, Vernon A. "Tommy" Adkins and wife Pamela Sue of Wayne, W.Va., Tracy L. Adkins and wife Dawn of Proctorville, Ohio, and Tillman M. Adkins of Huntington, W.Va.; a special friend whom she loved as a daughter, Erica L. McVey of Huntington, W.Va.; four sisters, Genevieve Skeens and Judith Booton of Wayne, W.Va., Lynn Asbury of Huntington, W.Va., and Sherry Fellure and husband Tom of Kenova, W.Va.; a brother, Edwin "Macky" Booton and wife Sandy of Wayne, W.Va.; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, W.Va., by Pastor Greg Tomblinson. Burial will follow at Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington. REV. GALLIE LEE ROBERTSON, 102, of Genoa, WV went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 1, 2011. He was born August 16, 1908 in Wayne County, WV. He served as Pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church for 55 years which he founded in 1959. His main passion in this life was to serve his Lord and he spread the word to everyone with which he came in contact. He started serving the Lord on September 1, 1928 and became a minister at the age of 21. He was also retired carpenter. A son of the late Bob and Marilyn Robertson, he was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 75 years, Mary Watts Robertson, two brothers John and Ezra, and three sisters Molly, Mary Elizabeth, and Eva. He was loved unconditionally and will be sadly missed by his only child, Ethel Robertson Harvey, with whom he made his home for the past five years; four grandchildren; Mrs. Harold (Barbara) Wilson, of Taylorsville, KY, Mrs. Jim (Bonnie) Arms, of Proctorville, OH, Mrs. Larry (Mary Lynn) Thompson of Genoa, WV, and Harold Curtis Harvey of Cincinnati, OH; nine great-grandchildren, Jackie Lee Adkins, MeLisa Davenport, Christy Adams, Beverly Luther, Michael Clary, Ben Thompson, Deana Akers, and Jennifer Smith and Dylan Thompson; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his special friend and caretaker Charlene Parsons of Genoa, WV. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home. GLENNA "MARGARET" AKERS ADKINS, age 85, of Prichard, W.Va., loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, friend and child of God went to be with her Lord on Friday, July 1, 2011, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. She was born Aug. 19, 1925, a daughter of the late Flemon Jackson Akers and Rebecca Susan Braley. Margaret was a member of Buffalo Valley Missionary Baptist Church. She was a long time member of the Centerville Homemakers Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Orville "Buck" Adkins. She is survived by one brother, Johnny (Wilma) Akers of Lakeland, Fla.; one son, Michael (Cheryl) Adkins of Wayne, W.Va.; three daughters, Patricia Adkins of South Charleston, W.Va., Ronda (Gary) Fortner of Prichard and Kathy (Bill) Robinson of Maple Valley, Wash.; three grandchildren, Erin (Albert) Collins of Prichard, Wesley (Ashley) Robinson of Maple Valley and Amanda Adkins of Huntington; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jace and Alyssa Collins of Newport, N.C., and Owen and Stella Robinson of Maple Valley; two special little friends, Ginger and Rascal; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, in memory of Glenna Margaret Adkins, 3100 Staunton Road, Huntington, WV 25702. HERMAN EUGENE PIERCE, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the VA Regional Medical Center. He was born June 30, 1940 in Boyd County, Kentucky, a son of the late Clarence and Laura Belle Pierce. Three sisters, Louise Barker, Pauline Ross and Betty Pelfrey, also preceded him in death. Herman served in the US Army and was a member of River City Lighthouse Church, Huntington. He leaves behind his loving wife of 30 years, Phyllis Pierce; two daughters, Darlene Pierce and Connie Pierce Adkins; two sons, Chris Pierce and Gene Herman Pierce; two sisters, Brenda Ross and Bonnie Stiltner; one brother, Donald Pierce; one step-son, Chuck Adams; one step-daughter, Donna Foster; and a host of friends and family too numerous to mention. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday July 5, 2011 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home, Wayne with Pastor and long time friend, James Van-Zandt officiating. Burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery.

CHARLES ARA MILLER, 50, of Genoa, WV, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2011 at his residence. He was born October 1, 1960 in Cabell County, WV, a son of the late Ara and Hester Thompson Miller. He was a former utility lineman. A brother, Jimmy Miller, also preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, Charles Dana Miller and David Michael Miller, both of Wayne, WV; a step-son, Aaron Anthony Thompson of Wayne, WV; a sister, Debbie Mays and husband, Wendell of Barboursville, WV. There will be no visitation or services. Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ERNEST DALE FRYE, 33, of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Monday, July 4, 2011 at home. He was preceded in death by maternal great-grandparents, Harvey and Bess Ellis Russell; paternal great-grandparents, Haden and Geneva Collins Adkins; and maternal grandmother, Lois Pack Russell. He leaves behind his companion, Cora Cyrus; his mother, Valerie Russell Ferguson of East Lynn, W.Va.; his father Ernest Frye, Jr., of East Lynn; two children, Christopher Frye and Kaitlin Frye, at home; three sisters, Christi Blankenship of Wayne, Jessica Frye of East Lynn, and Kayla Frye of Genoa, W.Va.; one brother, Shane Skeens of East Lynn; one step-sister, Olivia Lane of Huntington; paternal grandmother Anna Frye of East Lynn; maternal grandfather, Harold Russell of East Lynn; special aunt, Lisa McComas of East Lynn; Best friend Sam Frye of Wayne; special friend Nikki Meadows of Wayne; several additional aunts, uncles, and cousins; and a host of friends. LILLIAN MARIE ROSS WILLIAMSON, 74, of Genoa, WV, passed away Monday, July 4, 2011 at Wayne Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Burial will follow at Community Memorial Gardens at Wayne. She was born April 28, 1937 at East Lynn, WV, a daughter of the late Jefferson and Cora Kelly Adams. Lillian was a homemaker and member of the former Lick Creek Baptist Church. Her first husband, Jim Ross, her second husband, Dillard Williamson, and a sister, Eileen Ball also preceded her in death. PATSY MAYNARD SMITH, 92, of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the home of a granddaughter in Wytheville, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2011, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, W.Va., by Elders Orville Damron and Roger Maynard. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery at Wayne. She was born June 28, 1919 in Wayne County, a daughter of the late Lindsey and Maude Asbury Maynard. Patsy was a retired pharmaceutical aide at the former Huntington State Hospital and was a member of the Echo United Baptist Church. Her husband, Welston Smith, a sister, Norma Lee Fletcher, four brothers, Hubert, Junior, Carlos and Paris Maynard, and a son-in-law, Tob Adkins, also preceded her in death. Memorial services for PEGGY S. McQUEEN, 78, of Cullman, Ala., will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Destiny Church in Cullman, Pastor Fred Rivers officiating. Peggy died at home Monday, July 4, 2011, of complications of pancreatic cancer and liver cancer. Peggy was born April 4, 1933, in Prichard, W.Va., to John and Corinne Thompson Smith. She graduated from Fort Gay High School in 1951, and married Charles E. "Pete" McQueen on May 18, 1957 in Fort Gay. They moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1957. Peggy retired from The Columbus Dispatch in 1993, and in 2000, Peggy and Pete moved to their dream home on Lewis Smith Lake near Cullman. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers David E. Smith, formerly of Louisa, Ky., and Gordon R. "Dick" Smith, formerly of Buckeye Lake, Ohio. Peggy is survived by her husband, Pete; daughter Leslie K. McQueen of Columbus, Ohio; sons John (Donna) McQueen, of Cullman; Charles L. McQueen of Hilliard, Ohio and Darren K. McQueen of Madison, Ala.; sister Karen J. Myer of Fort Gay; brother Edwin S. CANDY LEE MALLORY, 38, of Kenova, W.Va., went to be with the Lord, on July 9, 2011. Candy was born October 19, 1972, to Joyce and Sammy Tomblin. Candy is survived by her husband, Robert L. Mallory of Kenova; three beautiful children, Kristin, Emily and Alexander Lovisa; two step-sons, Justin and Ryan Mallory of Groveport, Ohio; and three grandsons, Dakota, Caleb and Hayden Mallory. She is also survived by her sister Rosie Vance of Kenova; brothers James Starkey of Huntington, Larry and wife B.J. Tomblin of Tennessee; and mother-in-law Nancy Mallory of Huntington; nieces and nephews Joshua Vance, Kaylee Starkey, Curtis and Megan Tomblin; and special uncle and aunt George Tomblin, Rose and Robert Garcia; and special friends at ITT Tech. CULLIE WILLIAMSON, 85, of Kenova, W.Va., went to be with the Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 10, 2011, at Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. C.J. Adkins. Burial will follow at Dock's Creek Cemetery, Kenova, W.Va. He was born July 16, 1925, in Crum, W.Va., a son of the late Jim and Lucinda Salmons Williamson. Cullie was a retired coal miner for Island Creek Coal and was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. From his birth, surviving the Great Depression, drafted out of high school to Omaha Beach in 1944, and raising five children, he was truly a member of this country's "Greatest Generation." He was also a member of the Silver Creek United Baptist Church, and for the last few years, had attended the Westmoreland Baptist Church. He was a 50-year member and a Past Master of the Jewell Lodge No. 140 of Crum, W.Va., which will conduct graveside rites. Also preceding him in death was his first wife, Minerva Ratcliff Williamson; his second wife, Elma Perdue Hicks Williamson; a sister, Reba Ramey; four brothers, Cecil, Clifton, Roy and Walter Williamson. Survivors include three daughters, Geneva George and husband Joe of Huntington, W.Va., Deborah May and husband John of Kenova, W.Va., Sherri Brewer and husband Steve of Crum, W.Va.; two sons, Larry D. REV. MARCUS AVERY EARP III, died at his residence in Hedgesville, WV, on July 11, 2011. He was born January 27, 1928, at Huntington, a son of the late Marcus Avery Earp II and Addie L. McGinnis Earp. Reverend Earp was a minister of the Fort Gay United Methodist Church in Fort Gay, WV, for two years, 1955-1957. He attended Wesley Theological Seminary. Upon graduation from Wesley Theological Seminary in 1961, Reverend Earp was accepted as an Elder in the Baltimore-Washington Conference. Revered Earp served in the United Methodist Church, and retired in 1992. He was a member of Wayne Masonic Lodge #18 AF&AM. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce Smith Earp; son Marcus Avery Earp IV of Herndon, Va.; daughter Kathryn Earp Spradling and husband Richard of Chambersburg, Pa.; two grandchildren, Jaime Michelle Fraley-Wagner and husband Jacob, and Jonathan Marcus Earp; one great-grandson Avery Matthew Wagner. Also preceding him in death were daughter-in-law Terry Chadwick Roe, special nieces Barbara Sue Roe Dolin, Debbie Eagle Fry, Brenda Kay Lester Lucas and nephew Hiram Ronald Jackson. Ted joined the Civilian Conservation Corps as a teenager, learning stone work while helping to build facilities throughout West Virginia including those at Bluebend. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the European/African/Middle Eastern Theaters during World War II. He retired as a bricklayer from Connors' Steel after 30-years and 8-months of service. A member of Camp Creek Freewill Baptist Church for 32-years, his life was a testimony to his faith in God. A quiet, humble man, all who took time to know him could see his great love for the Lord and for his family. He was a lifelong farmer and liked nothing better than working his farm and tending his livestock. An avid gardener, he was known for the many beautiful roses he started from slips for friends and family. This season, he was growing a vegetable garden along with the next three generations of his family. He was mischievous and enjoyed joking and story-telling with those close to him. Children loved him almost as much as he loved them and they gravitated to him wherever he was. He was greatly loved and respected by all who knew him. Words cannot express how sorely he will be missed. His sons, son-in-law, grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, is in charge of arrangements. CLARENCE "DENNY" DENNIS BOOTH, 89, of Charleston, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 15, 2011, at Cedar Ridge Nursing Home after a long illness. Born November 5, 1921, he was the son of the late Clarence Eugene and Etta Dennis Booth of Centerville, Wayne County, W.Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Roy and Howard Booth, and a sister, Leora Dawson. Denny had a former career with Chapman Printing Company, Huntington, W.Va. Denny and his wife, Lucy, started their own engraving business and named it Denlu Engraving. They worked it for 20 years. Denny served in the United States Air Force during World War II as a cryptographer. He was an avid golfer and was a very prominent player. He kept himself active on the golf course. He is survived by his wife of 69-1/2 years, Lucy Edna Booth, of Charleston, and several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. CHARLES WALLACE DAWSON, 82, of Milton, W.Va., passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the Spring Valley VA Medical Center. He was born October 14, 1928, in Fort Gay, W.Va., the eldest son of George Wallace and Jessie Raines Dawson. He was raised at Crum, W.Va., and he graduated from Wayne High School in 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he was a staff sergeant and a cryptographer at the time of his discharge in 1949. He entered what was then Marshall College and graduated with a BA in Business Administration in 1952. He then married Sally Janet Dameron, who preceded him in death, and with whom he had two sons, Charles W. (Anita Tabor) Dawson Jr., and Jon Preston Dawson, all of Milton. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jon Preston Dawson Jr. and Alexandria Dawson of Milton, and Elizabeth Hughes Taylor of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Herbert Dawson of Crum and Jack Dawson of Columbus, Ohio; and one sister-in-law, Ima Jean Dawson of Crum. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James Franklin Dawson and Ralph Leon Dawson, and two sisters, Mary Carroll Reinhardt and Phyllis Ann "Dolly" Browning. He was owner and president of Hogan Storage and Transfer of Williamson, W.Va., at the time of his retirement. He was a member of the Wayne County Genealogical and Historical Society, a Kentucky Colonel, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Sons of the Confederacy, and the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church. He was also an avid fan of the Thundering Herd football team and never missed a home game for over 20 years. MOSE ARTHUR NAPIER, 79, of Ceredo, W.Va., was reunited with June, his wife of 56 years and love of his life, in the presence of our Lord on Thursday, July 21, 2011. He was born Oct. 14, 1931, to the late William K. and Ethel Mae Napier at Ceredo, W.Va. He was a graduate of Ceredo-Kenova High School, after which he proudly served his country with the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge after being stationed in Korea and Japan. He then attended Marshall College and earned B.A. and master degrees in education. He was an educator and administrator for the Wayne County, W.Va., school system. He taught at Buffalo High School and was assistant principal, then principal of same. He became assistant superintendent of Wayne County Schools before becoming superintendent in 1974. Before retiring in 1988, he returned to the classroom to teach at Ceredo-Kenova High School, as teaching was his first love during his time as an educator. In 1969, he became mayor of Ceredo. During his 40-year reign as mayor, his vision for the future brought growth to the town in the form of business and industry, beautification, historical importance, government and population. One can appreciate his love for his hometown through reading his book, "The History of Ceredo," and through his writings and editing of The New Crescent, a revival of Ceredo's original newspaper, The Crescent. His lifelong dedication to Ceredo was recognized in 2000 when the U.S. Rt. 60 bridge over Twelvepole Creek at the east end of the town was rebuilt and named "The Mose A. Napier Bridge." He was a member from childhood and deacon emeritus of First Baptist Church of Ceredo. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Masonic Lodge. Last fall, he earned lifetime membership in the Masonic Lodge after being a member of Crescent Lodge No. 32 for 50 years, during which time he served a term as worshipful master. As well as his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, William Napier Miranda; a brother, William K. Napier; and five sisters, Lorraine Norris, Virginia Muncy, Lillian Porter, Shirley Craig and Dorothy Napier. CURTIS A. ASBURY, 93, of Dunlow, W.Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 23, 2011. He was born September 24, 1917, in Wayne, W.Va., a gift to parents Charles W. and Sarah Perry Asbury. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by five brothers, Charles (Perry), Tom, Jim, Jack and Neal Asbury, as well as three sisters, Billy Asbury Cloud Runyon, Reba Asbury Kobliska and Charlene Asbury Hyden. Three surviving siblings include brother Ted Asbury and wife Ailene, and sisters Lillian Asbury Brown and Connie Asbury Kinney. Many knew him as "Curt" or "Pap" from Mingo TV and Appliance in Kermit, W.Va., or as the Supervisor of Wayne County Department of Highways, or most notably from Asbury's Grocery in Dunlow. In his early Christian life, he contributed to the creation of the Dunlow Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a member and served as director of Sunday School classes. Later he was called to the Fairmount United Baptist Church in Dunlow, where he faithfully served as Deacon for many years. He enjoyed fishing from his houseboat with family, especially his grandson Jimmy and his canine companions. Family was his greatest and most fulfilling achievement, which he began with his wife Millie Ferguson Asbury. He is survived by Millie, his wife of 72 years; two admiring sons, Elijah Ronald Asbury and wife Doris and Michael Lee Asbury; three grandchildren, Rhonda Asbury Clovis and husband Matthew, Melissa Asbury Cagigas, and James "Jimmy" Asbury; three great-grandchildren, Sarah Blackburn and husband Jeff, Rachel Doss and husband Todd, and John Cagigas; as well as one great-great-grandchild, Elijah Wade Blackburn. She was born July 6, 1947, a daughter of the late Millard Spencer and Alma Wallace. She was also preceded in death by one son, David Franklin Mays; two brothers, Charles Spencer and B.H. Spencer; and two sisters, Goldie Rice and Charity Stafford. She is survived by two sons, Michael Mays and wife Kimberly and Shawn Collins; Stephanie Graley, who she considered her own daughter, and Cody Graley, who, to her, was a very special grandson. Also surviving is one brother, Ray Spencer of Columbus, Oh; and special friends, Haleigh Rowe, Chrissy Wray, Rachel Perry, George Carter, Woody Pritchard, Harold Howell; and a very special friend, Melvin; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends too numerous to mention.
