Funeral service for CECIL "SATCH" CHAFFIN JR., 63, of Hopkins, S.C., will be held at noon Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Reger Funeral Chapel, Huntington, W.Va., with burial in the Ward Family Cemetery, Wayne County, W.Va. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until noon prior to the service. Mr. Chaffin will be greatly missed by everyone. Mr. Chaffin died Sunday, January 1, 2012. Born in Huntington, W.Va., he was the eldest son of the late Cecil and Sylvia Marcum Chaffin. Satch attended Buffalo High School and graduated from Marshall University. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force. Satch was the Director of the Westmoreland Boys Club in Huntington and served as a firefighter with the Lavalette Volunteer Fire Department. After his retirement from Dorn VA Hospital, he sold real estate with Russell and Jeffcoat. Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Amy Ward Chaffin; daughters Alysia Cass Roy and Caitlyn Fay Jones; son Spencer Ward Chaffin; grandson Hunter Lane Jones; granddaughter Madeline Elise Roy; and brother Michael Chaffin. ERVIN ELDRFED WOOTEN, 88, of East Lynn, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 1, 2012. He was born April 18, 1923 in Logan County, a son of the late Aley and Ethel Wooten. Three brothers, Burl Wooten, Earl Wooten, and Franklin Wooten also preceded him in death, along with infant daughter Gladys Wooten, son Aley Wooten, Jr., and stepson Kip Adkins. Ervin served in the US Air Force during WWII. He was a retired steelworker and a member of the Church of Christ. He leaves behind his wife, Melita Adkins Wooten; two sons, Danny Wooten and wife Jeanie of Piketon, Oh., Freddie Wooten of Huntington, W.Va.; two brothers Homer Wooten and his wife Maple of Wayne, Henry Wooten and wife Minta of Beech Fork, W.Va.; two sisters, Margalee Adkins of Wayne, Macie Adkins and husband Mack of Branchland, W.Va.; two stepdaughters, Yvonne Conn and her husband Terry of Man, W.Va., and Patty Adkins, and special granddaughter, Melita Brooke Adkins, both of East Lynn; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; and 14 step-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2011 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Elder Alex Spaulding officiating. Burial will follow in the Jones Cemetery. JULIA KITTS OTTER, 89, of Lavalette, WV, went to be with the Lord January 2, 2012 at her residence. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Thursday, January 4, 2012 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Tommy Kitts. Burial will follow at Kitts Cemetery, Fort Gay, WV. She was born April 16, 1922 in Fort Gay, WV, a daughter of Harvey and Cuzzie Smith Kitts. Julia was a homemaker and member of Faith Freewill Baptist Church. Her husband of 53 years, George Ray Potter also preceded her in death, along with three sisters, Garnett, Mary and Noana, as well as eight brothers, Sid, John, Harvey, Arthur, Hence, Luther, Wayne and Chester. Survivors include three sons, Johnie Ray Potter and wife, Charlotte of Nicholasville, KY, Gale Oakley Potter and wife, Judy of White Lake, MI, Greg Potter and wife, Joan of Fort Gay, WV; six grandchildren, Sheila Carroll, Donna Potter, Tammi Elford, Stephanie Moss, Jamie Potter and Johnie Lee Potter; fourteen great grandchildren and a host of great-great grandchildren. CHARLES EDWARD TURNER, 71, of Huntington, WV passed away Monday, January 2, 2012 at his residence. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday at the Reger Funeral Chapel, by Pastor Roger Mooney and Pastor Jim Parsons. Burial will follow in Docks Creek Cemetery, Kenova. Charles was born August 12, 1940 in Huntington, WV a son of the late Donald and Dolly Johnson Turner. He was a retired supermarket meat cutter, a US Navy Veteran, and a member of Kellogg Independent Church of God Holiness. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Fay Catherine Ward Turner, one grandson, Wesley Scott Turner and one sister Juanita Lively. Survivors include two sons, Michael E. Turner and Charles E. Turner, Jr., five grandchildren: Jason, Adam, Matthew, Drew and Chris Turner; one great grandson Wesley Turner; one brother, Donald L. Turner, two sisters, Helen Eves, Janice Panganiban and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 5, at the Reger Funeral Home.

PEGGY ANN HOPPERS, 66, of Kenova WV passed away January 3, 2012 at her residence. She was born February 20, 1945. She is survived by her mother Airgette Ola Hoppers, one step son Randy Sharp and three sisters Mary Prime and Esters Owens both of Summerville, SC and Joyce Webb of Green Cove Springs, FL and two brothers David Wilky and Johnny Hulon. There will be no visitation or services. Ferrell-Chambers Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

VERNON WILSON, SR., 60, of Fort Gay, WV went to be with the Lord on January 3, 2012 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, WV. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Friday, January 6, 2012 at Oak Grove Church, Fort Gay, WV with Pastors Mac Ray Cyrus and Luther Dingess officiating. Burial will follow to the Wilson Cemetery, Genoa, WV. Vernon was born April 5, 1951 in Genoa, WV, a son of Clara Lucille Wilson and the late James Wilson. Vernon is preceded in death by his father, two brothers, Chester Wilson and Earl Wilson, and a grandson Courtney Lee Wilson. He was married 40 wonderful years to Sharon Gay Wilson, and he had a daughter, Starlena (Paul) Rigsby of Catlettsburg, KY; one adopted granddaughter whom they raised, Katrina Lynn Wilson, daughter of Robert Allen, at home; three sons, Vernon (Pennie) Wilson , Jr. of Genoa, WV, Robert Allen Wilson of Wayne, WV, and James Minnes (Sharon Jewell) Wilson, Sr. of Genoa, WV; six grandchildren, Amber (Josh) Qualls, Alissa Rigsby, James Minnes Wilson, Jr., Kimberly Jewell Wilson, Brittnee Ann Wilson, and Rianna Faye Wilson; three great grandchildren, Atreyu Qualls, Haden Curry and Kyler Curry; special friends, Johnny Bowens, Glen Adams, and Danny Starr; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. DENNIS MORGAN ADKINS, 69, of Ranger, WV, died Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at St. Mary= s Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Friday, January 6, 2012 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel by Brother Bennie Dean. Burial will follow at Dennis Adkins Family Cemetery, Ranger, WV. He was born July 8, 1942 in Kiahsville, WV, a son of the late Lindsey and Haney Adkins. Dennis was a truck driver for Wayne Lumber. Survivors include his wife, Kathy Adkins; a daughter, Amy Adkins and companion, Richard A Sandy@ Davis; and two grandchildren, Katie and Nick. KENNIN JAMES VARNEY, 66, of Crum, WV; passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, WV. He was born on March 28, 1945 in Crum, WV; he was a son of the late Thomas Jay and Hazel Gilman Varney. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Varney. Kennin is survived by his brothers; Lowell R. (Estella) Varney of Chillicothe, OH, John B. (Goldie) Varney of Circleville, Ohio, Charles Jerry Varney and Oscar J. (Judy) Varney both of Crum, WV as well as 1 sister, Pearl Faye Varney of Crum, WV as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield Chapel with Carter Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the Varney Cemetery of Crum, WV. Visitation will be from 11:30am B 1:00pm on Saturday at the chapel. ELIZABETH "BETTY" FANNIN WELLMAN, 82, of Huntington, W.Va., peacefully passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at First Baptist Ceredo by Pastor Rodney Hale. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Betty is survived by her husband of 64 years and high school sweetheart, Eugene Lee Wellman; one daughter, Linda (Gene) Smith of Huntington; two sons, David Wellman of Huntington and Chuck (Lori) Wellman of Milton; one brother, Frank (Melanie) Fannin of Parkersburg; two sisters, Mary Francis (Don) Ward of Point Pleasant and Lillian (Jack) Patterson of Huntington; three granddaughters, Kacey (Ben) Johnson of Wayne, and Jordan and Kara Hancock of Milton; three grandsons, Nick (Casey) Wellman of Huntington, Drew Wellman of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Dylan Wellman of Milton; one great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Wellman of Huntington; and one great-grandson, Lincoln Johnson of Wayne. Betty was born on Jan. 26, 1929, daughter of the late Ada and Harry Fannin. She was a member of First Baptist Ceredo and was retired from Tidewater Supply Co. She loved working in her yard in Spring Valley and she loved spending time with her beloved family. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday at First Baptist Ceredo. ELIZABETH ANN PIERSON HOFFMAN, 78, of Milton passed away Thursday, January 5, 2012, at Huntington Health & Rehab Center. Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2012, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Pastor Bill Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born June 1, 1933, in Wayne County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Floyd and Martha Perdue Smith. She was also preceded in death by her first husband James Scott Pierson and her late husband Earl Hoffman, a son James Bart Pierson and three brothers. Ann was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she was involved in the bus ministry and choir for many years, as well as various other ministries. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Diane Pierson, Scott and Sharon Pierson and Brett and Kristi Pierson, all of Ona; one daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Donald Chapman of Huntington; one brother and sister-in-law, Kyle and Mikie Smith of North Carolina; six grandchildren, Kimberly Smith, Kristopher Bowyer, James Scott Pierson, Erica Jude, Jessi Pierson and Jossi Tierney; nine great-grandchildren, Lakeyn Smith, Christian Smith, Isaac Pierson, Isaiah Pierson, Gracee Bowyer, Payton Bowyer, Mali Jude, Brinkley Jude and Colton Tierney; and a host of many other family and friends. EARL BERT " E. B." LYCAN, 75 of Bromley Ridge Road Fort Gay, WV passed away Friday January 6, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family. E. B. was born May 26, 1936 on Dry Branch at Globe, KY., the son of the late Bert Landan Biggs and Hazel Cline Lycan. He was a retired American Electric Power employee at the Big Sandy Plant. He served in the United States Navy. Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years Anna Ruth Akers Lycan; two daughters and son-in-laws Lynn and George Robinett of Fort Gay, WV, Ann and Larry Joe Robinett also of Fort Gay; a son John Lycan of Brevig Mission, Alaska; seven grandchildren Tommy (Lisa) Robinett, Sonny (April) Robinett, Kacy (Andy) Leedy, Joey Robinett, Adam Robinett, Joshua Robinett, and Lucy Robinett; five great grandchildren Payton, Ashley, Allison, Elijah, and Ezra; three sisters Carol Davis and Margaret Clark both of Fort Gay, WV and Linda Barnett of Charlotte, NC. E.B. was preceded in death by his grandson Jesse Cleave Lycan, step father Milton Lycan, and mother-in-law and father-in-law Mommy Lucy and Pap Mack. SYLVIA MOON, 87, of Wayne, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 6, 2012 at the Emogene Dolin Hospice House in Huntington surrounded by her family. " I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith" . 2nd Timothy 4-7. She was born August 12, 1924 in Wayne Co., a daughter of the late George and Fannie Wheeler Pack. Her husband, James Moon, a son, Jimmy Moon, two sons-in-law, Grover Maynard and Bob Tucker, two sisters Hattie and Gracie and seven brothers Pharoh, Luther, Sam, Rennie, Lawrence, Fern and Keither also preceded her in death. Survivors include five daughters, Marie (Gilmer) Marcum, Fannie (Tom Ed) Maynard, Diana (Tommy) Watts, Joyce (James) Baisden, and Virginia Tucker; two sons, Frank (Freda) Moon and Roy (Nancy) Moon; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Mae McCoy and a sister-in-law, Martha Pack and a brother-in-law Hubert Webb. Sylvia was a member of the Echo United Baptist Church and was a devoted mother, grandmother and a devout servant of the Lord. She never passed up an opportunity to share the gospel. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2012 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Johnson Queen and Roger Maynard officiating. Burial followed at the Pres Friley Cemetery, Cove Gap. Friends called from 6 -9 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at the funeral home. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Special thanks go to the Hospice House staff, her home nurse Becky, caregiver Missy, her Doctor Dr. Brandon Webb, special friend Vida Bradshaw and to Tommy & Diana Watts for their care for Sylvia over the years.

ARVEL DALE ENDICOTT, 69, Jennies Creek Rd. Kermit, WV; passed away on Friday, January 6, 2012 at his home. He was born on January 29, 1942 in Wayne Co., WV; he was a son of the late James and Ona Davis Endicott. He was a member of the UMWA and a disabled coal miner from Marrowbone development. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his wife; Maggie Copley Endicott. Arvel is survived by his children: Roger Endicott of Columbus, OH, Renee (Billy) Blackburn of Jennies Creek, WV, Hazel Hawthorne of Columbus, OH, Gail McCloughin of Columbus, OH as well as brothers, Lowell (Sonny) Endicott of Columbus, OH and Lyle Endicott of Crum, WV. Arvel also leaves behind special nephews; Birdie Dale Collins, Shawn Copley, and Herbie Williamson and niece, Lisa Endicott. Arvel will be missed by his grandchildren: Lea Blackburn, Cole Blackburn, Jen Allen Copley, Jacob Copley, Alicia McCloughin, and Kristin McCloughin and 1 great-grandchild. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, January 9, 2012 at the Silver Creek United Baptist Church with Dale Crum officiating. Burial followed in the Williamson Cemetery of Jennies Creek, WV; Mudlick Road. Visitation was after 6 p.m. at the Church on Sunday. Arrangements are under the direction of the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, KY.

TERRY COOK, age 53, of Silver Springs, FL died Friday, January 6, 2012 at home in Sliver Springs. Terry was born August 16, 1958 in Louisa, KY. He is the son of the late Olie and Norma Maude (Preston) Cook. He was a Mechanic. He is survived by one daughter: Tonya Cook of Campbellsville, KY; his mother Norma Maude (Preston) Cook; five brothers: Richard Cook of Louisa, KY, Robert Cook of Louisa, KY, Dean Cook of Louisa, KY, Eugene Cook of Quincy, KY, Mitchell Cook of Orient, OH; He also has one grandson, Logan Emitt Trulock of Campbellsville, KY; sister-in-law, Doris Cook of Louisa, KY; sister-in-law, Sue Cook of Louisa, KY; sister-in-law, Georgia Cook of Orient, OH; 9 nieces and nephews, Predeceased by his father, Olie Cook, niece, Robin Cantrell, niece, Diane Cook, brother, Jerry Lee Cook. The funeral was held on Tuesday January 10th at 2:00 pm at Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Doc Maynard officiating. Burial was in Cook Cemetery Louisa, KY. Calling hours were Monday, January 9 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Wilson Funeral Home.

ADA LEE NEW CHATTERTON, of Lavalette, WV was born Ada Lee Hammond in Hardy, Ky on July 24, 1929. She died January 6, 2012 at St. Mary= s Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Myron Chatterton. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda New Wright of Huntington, WV, two grandsons, Jason Wright and Joshua Wright also of Huntington, WV, and two great-grandchildren, Karighan and Turner. In addition she is survived by three sisters, Wilma Setser and Rosa Lee Waters both of Phoenix, AZ and Georgina Galilei of Columbus, Ohio. She was retired from the State of West Virginia and has been employed part time by Southwestern Community Action. She resided in Louisa, Ky for many years and has been a member of the Louisa Chapter of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She is also a member of First Baptist Church of Louisa. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Reger Funeral Chapel; burial will follow in Spring Valley Memory Gardens, Huntington, WV. Mr. KENNETH A. CHAPMAN, 65, of Kenova, W.Va., husband of Elizabeth Hager Chapman, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012, in the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. He was a machine operator in the strip mill with INCO, and a 32nd degree Mason. He was born January 21, 1946, in Cabell County, W.Va., a son of the late Allen F. Chapman and Helen Parker Chapman Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father Ralph Thompson. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and John Clagg of Huntington; grandchildren Dane Clagg and Baylie Clagg; brothers John Chapman of Huntington and Greg Thompson of Genoa, W.Va.; a sister Diane Runyon of South Point, Ohio; a special aunt Nell Shelton of Huntington, and a special cousin, Linda Hovey of Huntington. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington. There will be no funeral services. JOHN DAVID FRALEY, 82, of Fort Gay died Jan. 8, 2012, in Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Ky., after a short illness. He was born April 21, 1929, in Louisa, Ky., the son of the late Albert and Effie Sammons Fraley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Anna Elizabeth Dowden who died in 2005. He was a retired truck driver from K-Lee Trucking Co., a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was in the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the Masons Vinson Lodge and F&A.M. Survivors include his two daughters, Tammy Spears of Fort Gay and Joyce Cundiff of Somerset, Ky.; four sons, Doug Fraley of Louisa, Mike Fraley of Winchester, Ky., Shawn Fraley and Van Fraley, both of Fort Gay; four sisters, Angey Hammonds and Edith Hanshaw, both of Louisa, Rita Burchette of Circleville, Ohio, and Nancy Sue Cave of Bremew, Ohio; one brother, Leon Fraley of Leesburg, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 10, in Young Funeral Home Chapel, Louisa, by the Rev. Frank Copley. Burial was in Wellman Cemetery, Fort Gay. Visitation was 5:30-9 p.m. Monday.

WALTER CHARLES FRAZIER, 66, of Ashland, Ky., died Jan. 8, 2012, at home after a short illness. He was born Aug. 23, 1945, in Clifford, Ky., a son of the late Richard and Gussie Farris Frazier. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Carl Frazier. He was a laborer and a member of Louisa Church of God. Survivors include his two daughters, Tabitha Murphy and Melissa A. Lyon-Davis both of Ashland; son, Walter Adam Frazier of Cape Coral, Fla.; two sisters, Rebecca Shannon and Wilma Shannon, both of Louisa, Ky.; five brothers, Burgess Frazier of Columbus, Ohio, Elmer Frazier of Ashland, Aulta Frazier, Richard Frazier and Kenneth Frazier, all of Louisa; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, in Young Funeral Home Chapel, Louisa. Burial was in Frazier Cemetery, Clifford.

KENNETH SCOTT, 66, of Lavalette, W.Va., passed away Sunday, January 8, 2012 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. He was born March 28, 1945 in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Boyd and Ada (Napier) Scott. One son, Kenneth Scott, Jr., also preceded him in death along with two brothers, Arnold Scott and Gene Scott, and two sisters, Barbara Dentil, and Karen Arietta. Kenneth served in the U.S. Army and retired from U.S. Equipment of Huntington. Survivors include one son, Steven Scott of Wayne, W.Va.; one brother Jerry Scott and his wife Loretta of Jackson, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews; and friends and family too numerous to mention. The family would like to thank the Hospice staff for their care and support. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Brother Harold Pelfrey officiating. Burial will follow in Community Memorial Gardens. JAMES MADISON RICHARDSON, JR., 79, of Wayne, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 10, 2012. He was born May 26, 1932, at Wayne, a son of the late James Madison and Clara Fry Richardson. He was also an Army combat veteran of the Korean War. Following his service in the US Army, he enlisted in the US Air Force where he continued his education in the field of electronics which lead to his career at North American/Rockwell in Columbus, Ohio where he personally worked on antennas which were used in the Apollo Space Program. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Richardson, Earl J. Richardson and Goble G. Richardson, and two sisters, Violet Fryer and Nellie Thompson. He was a loving papaw to eight grandchildren, Ronald Rowe, Jr., Erica Rowe and Hannah Butcher; James Wallace and Lacie Wallace; Tempest Richardson; and Ayla Edwards and Noah Morgan; two great grandchildren, Roderik Rowe and Mikaly Madison Rowe and many loving nephews, nieces, sisters-in-law and friends. LEON FRANKLIN FRALEY, 76, died peacefully on January 10, 2012, after a recurrence of lung cancer. Whether called Snook, Freddie, Leon, Gramps or Dad, he was loved by all who were fortunate enough to be part of his life - for a moment or a lifetime. Leon grew up in Fort Gay, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1955. He proudly served his country for 20 years and retired in 1975 as a Sergeant First Class (E-7), serving two tours in Korea and one in Vietnam. He married Anna E. Parrill in August 1957; they were happily married 37 years-until her death in January 1995. He and Ann had Kitty in 1959 and Kelly in 1960. If there was one thing Leon loved more than cooking, fishing, and hunting, it was his family. Leon and his family moved to San Antonio, TX, in 1970 from Anchorage, AK. After retiring from the Army in 1975, Leon became a cross-country truck driver. He was owner/operator of Fraley Family Trucking before retiring and returning to Louisa, KY, in 1999. He married Joan Carter of Inez, KY, in December 2001 and became a stepfather to her five grown children. At the time of his death, his family had grown to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Effie Fraley, five brothers, and seven sisters. Survivors include his wife, Joan; daughter Kitty Fraley King and son-in law Brian of Colorado Springs, CO; son Kelly Leon Fraley and daughter-in-law Natalie of San Antonio, TX; granddaughters Kendall A. King and Kaeli L. King of Colorado Springs; grandsons Forrest F. Fraley and Zachary L. Fraley and granddaughter Devin D. Fraley of San Antonio; sisters Ann Hammonds and Edith Hanshaw of Louisa, KY; Rita Burchette of Jackson, OH; and Nancy Sue Cave of Bremen, OH. Other survivors include three stepdaughters , two stepsons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, January 15 at 2 p.m. Viewing is Saturday, January 14 from five to nine in the evening. The funeral and viewing will be at Young= s Funeral Home in Louisa, KY. Interment at Wellman Cemetery will follow the service.

BILLY ROY MUNCY, 53 Years old, lifetime resident of Crum, passed away in his sleep on Wednesday morning January 11, 2012 at the home of his eldest brother. MYRTLE BLANCHE ARTRIP KIRK, 98, of Groveport, Ohio, formerly of Fort Gay, went to join the Heavenly host on January 15, 2012 Myrtle was born April 10, 1913 at Vinson Branch. near Glenhayes to the late Dixie Hardwick Artrip Fugett, and Boyd Artrip, who later died in the flu epidemic of 1918. Myrtle was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church of Mt. Gilead ,Ohio, she loved the Lord, and loved singing his praises. She exemplified proverbs ch. 31-10:31 Myrtle worked hard all her life, raising her eight children, plus four step sons and daughters on a hillside farm in Wayne County. Times were hard, but she endured every trial, including the loss of three children. Her faith was strong to the very end. Myrtle was a great hand at both sewing and knitting, and enjoyed reading and story telling. She loved working with her flowers, and could make anything grow. Myrtle was preceded in death by husband Walter Kirk Sr. and daughters Vemice Kirk and Betty Kirk Wellman, also by son, Mack Kirk, four step-children, Luther Kirk, Ira Kirk, Charlotte Russell, and Beatrice Perry. She was also preceded by brother George Artrip, sisters Carrie Taylor and Annie Blevins as well as half brothers Colonel Fugett, James Fugett, Albert Fugett and half sister, Francis Pratt. Myrtle is survived by six of her children; sons Walter (Betty) Kirk, and William (Linda) Kirk ,all of Marengo, Ohio and daughters Ruth Remchuck, of Sarastoa FI., Carrie (Charles) Callahan of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Darlene (Errol) Tom of Hilliard, Ohio and Sharri (Bill) Sheats of Canal Winchester, Ohio Myrtle was also blessed with twenty-nine grandchildren and thirty-nine great grandchildren. Myrtle lived a long and fruitful life and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

THOMAS J. "TOM" VARGO, 72, of Leon, W.Va., passed away January 15, 2012, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Tom was born Oct. 25, 1939, in Huntington, W. Va. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Vargo; and mother, Gladys (Keefer) Vargo. Tom graduated from Ceredo-Kenova High School and served in the Navy. He worked primarily in the auto industry, including as a service writer for Harley Davidson of Huntington, Madison Smith Mercedes of Nashville, and Love Lexus Toyota in St. Albans. He also worked various jobs in construction, sales and at the auto auction in Nitro. In his younger years, Tom enjoyed golf, tennis and boating. He enjoyed living on his houseboat in Nashville and parties on the lake. After returning to West Virginia to be closer to his mother, he renewed some old friendships and enjoyed the company of his immediate family, especially his special niece, Abby Vargo of Leon. Tom was a lifelong bachelor and is survived by his brothers, Steve, Don and David Vargo, all of Huntington, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews. No service is planned. CLARENCE FREDERICK "FRED" SHEWEY, 95, of Gainesville, Florida, formerly of Kermit, West Virginia passed away January 16, 2012 at home of complications due to kidney disease. He was born in War Eagle, W.Va., the son of Thomas A. and V. Mae Shewey. His family moved to Kermit when he was a little boy. He grew up in Kermit and attended public schools and graduated there. On July 16, 1938, he married Christine Akers with whom he had a happy and fruitful marriage. They raised two children, Bill and Bob. Fred and Christine were married for more than 69 years until her passing on October 11, 2007. Their marriage was uncommon because they loved each other so willingly and were the perfect fit. Fred was an influential community and business leader in the Tug Valley region of West Virginia for many years. He was a major force in the state's natural resource industries, beginning in oil and gas and evolving into lumber and coal. He was one of the founders of Dash Coal Company, which grew into International Industries, Inc. He worked daily with his dear friend and business partner, James H. "Buck" Harless. In addition, he was owner and president of Grey Eagle Construction Company, Inc. He was a member of the Kermit United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Directors of Inez Deposit Bank, Inez, Kentucky. At Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., he was a member of the Fine & Performing Arts Gala and Annual Fund; a member of the President's Circle; the John Marshall Society; and an Emeritus member, Circle of Gold, of the Marshall University Foundation. He was a member of the International Oil and Gas Producers Association, the West Virginia Coal Association, Shriners International, Boy Scouts of America, Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce and many other civic organizations. Fred received many awards throughout his life. He received the Distinguished West Virginia Award in 1996 and again in 2010. he is recognized and honored on the Pathway to Prominence Wall at Marshall University and the Fred and Christine Shewey Athletics Building at Marshall. Fred believed strongly in the value of education and served 18 years on the Mingo County Board of Education in West Virginia. He established scholarships at Marshall University and the University of Florida. He started the Shewey Research and Learning Center for the southern counties of West Virginia with an emphasis on serving Mingo County. He contributed to the new Mingo Central Comprehensive High School, and its wellness center bears his name. He enjoyed playing golf and hit a hole in one at the age of 74, a delightful moment upon which he fondly reflected. Fred was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Christine Akers Shewey; father, Thomas A, Shewey; mother, V. Mae Shewey; brother, Thomas A. Shewey, Jr.; sister, Virginia Foote; and daughter in law, Linda Cooper Shewey. He is survived by two sons: Bill of Richmond, Virginia; Bob (Kathy) of Gainesville, Fla.; grandchildren: Kasey (Christian) White, James (Kathryn) Shewey, Scot (Tara) Shewey and Sandy Shewey; great-granddaughters: Taryn and Sadie White; niece, Joyce Shewey Eaves, and nephew, Danny Burns. CHRISTOPHER TERRY SMITH, 28, of Princeton, West Virginia, formerly of Huntington, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2012. He was born August 17, 1983, and was preceded in death by his father, Charles Terry Smith, of Prichard, West Virginia, and his paternal grandfather, Charles Clifford Smith. Christopher is survived by his mother and stepfather, Beverly and Mike Perry of Jackson, Ohio; his younger sister, Gretchen Smith of Huntington, West Virginia; his special niece, Katelyn Harmon; paternal grandmother Betty Smith; maternal grandparents, Rev. HENRY C. LEWIS, 83, of Fairless Hills, Pa., formerly of Kenova, W.Va., died Friday, January 20, 2012, at Pennsylvania Hospital. He was born and raised in Kenova and was a graduate of C-K High School. He lived the past 58 years in Fairless Hills, where he worked for U.S. Steel= s Fairless Works in the National Tube Division for nearly 40 years until retiring in 1993. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. In earlier years, Mr. Lewis was an avid gardener who enjoyed working with his hands. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann Lewis. Mr. Lewis was the loving father of Henry C. Lewis Jr. of Burlington, N.J., and the grandfather of Jessemine Rose Loston of Burlington, and the great-grandfather of Darius James Lavery-Loston and Andraya Lenore Loston. SARAH WATTS MILLER, 86, of East Lynn, W.Va., went to be with the Lord, Saturday, January 21, 2012. She was born March 9, 1925 in Cabell County, W.Va., a daughter of the late French and Emma Watts. Her husband, Asa Miller preceded her in death along with daughter, Sue Noble and son-in-law, Greg Stanley. Sarah attended Laurel Freewill Baptist Church and also Big Lynn Freewill Baptist Church. She leaves behind three daughters, Emma Jean Matzdorff of East Lynn, Phyllis Spaulding and her husband Timothy of South Point, Ohio, Ann Stanley of Lavalette, W.Va.; one son, Gary Miller of East Lynn; two sisters, Hester Christian of Huntington, W.Va., and Mittie Lawson of Rittman, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors too numerous to mention. MARJORIE L. RICHARDSON HATTEN, "MARGIE", was born April 7, 1925, in Peru, Ind., the daughter of Fred Joseph Richardson and Zora Marquiss Richardson. She passed away at home on Jan. 21, 2012, after a short illness. She was preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband of over 50 years, Francis Milton "Rainbo" Hatten; two brothers, Glenn "Smokey" and Joseph Jesse; and one sister, Doris Griggs. In 1944, after meeting Rainbo in her own restaurant in Peru, they married and settled in Kentucky for 12 years, before moving to Kenova, W.Va., to live the rest of their lives. Margie was very active in the PTA, serving several terms as president of the Wayne County Council and was partially responsible for the first book levies in Wayne County. She is survived by two sisters and two brothers, Shirley (Wayne) Klepinger of Bunker Hill, Ind., Uva (Mac) Lesley of Columbia City, Ind., Jerry (Ann) Richardson of Peru, Ind., and Herbert Richardson of Peru, Ind.; three children and one stepdaughter, Joseph M. (Sherry) of St. Albans, W.Va., Charles W. (Barbara) of Kenova, W.Va., Frances M. Stewart, living in Michigan City, Ind., and Lavera Anne H. Dishman, living in Louisville, Ky.; six grandchildren, Steven J. Hatten of St. Albans, W.Va., Bryan F. Hatten of Kenova, W.Va., Kevin D. Steward of Loveland, Colo., Keith R. (Kasey) Stewart of Chicago, Ill., Wendy (Mark) Jenkins of Kenova, W.Va., and Melanie (Bruce) Christianson, Hutto, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Jack and Sara Jenkins of Kenova, W.Va., and Brooke and Hayden Christianson of Hutto, Texas; a very special nephew, Curtis E. Hinkle of Huntington, W.Va., and all who loved her dearly. CLYDE BENNETT SPARKS, 86, of Kermit, WV passed away Monday, Jan. 23, 2012 at ARH Hospital in South Williamson, KY. He was born Nov. 13, 1925 in Clifford, KY, to the late Charlie and Jane Peters Sparks. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mary Rose Pope Sparks, his grandson, Eric Sparks, and his brother, Proctor Sparks. Survivors include his brothers, Fred [Thelma Jean] Sparks of Kenova, WV, Mack [Pat] Sparks of Jacksonville, FL, his sister, Elsie [Ira] Conn of Hurricane, WV; his sons, Charles [Sue] Sparks of Kermit, WV, Jim [Robin] Sparks of Richmond, VA, and Bob [Sharon] Sparks of Kenova, WV; grandchildren, Bryan, Angie, Andrea, Johnathan, and Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Payton, Myles, and Judah. Clyde was a US Navy veteran, having served during WWII. He was active in his community, serving as town recorder and councilman many terms. He was a lifelong member of Kermit Masonic Lodge 167 and a member of Kermit United Baptist Church where he loved to attend and sing Bass with the church. JEANNINE LOUISE WISEMAN FULKS, 71, of Huntington, WV passed away Wednesday morning, January 25, 2012 at home with members of her family by her side. She was the daughter of the late Stanley E. Wiseman and Ida Lycan Wiseman also of Huntington. Jeannine was a graduate of Huntington High School 1958 and Marshall University 1962 with a degree in music education. She taught three years in the Wayne County school system before retiring to her home to be a full time mother, homemaker and wife. It was her purpose to be the best mother she could possibly be and that goal she attained at the highest level. Jeannine is survived by her husband of forty-nine years, Paul N. Fulks and two sons, Brent Nelson Fulks, his wife Renee and children Emily Morgan and Claire Averie of Ona, West Virginia; Steven Geoffrey Fulks, his wife Tonia and children Haley Elizabeth, Kaitlyn Noel, and Loren Shae of Williamstown, West Virginia. Surviving siblings are Angela Wiseman Schaedler and husband Rev. Tony Schaedler of Nashville, Georgia; Don Edward Wiseman and his wife Mary Witten Wiseman of Huntington, West Virginia. Jeannine was a lifelong Methodist with her recent membership being at Johnson Memorial Methodist Church. Jeannine was active all her married life supporting the programs in which her husband and sons found themselves involved, whether it be band, athletic teams or hobbies. She was an active member of the Quiltblockers at the Vinson Memorial Christian Church where she will be missed by her many friends. She loved working with the crafts of our Appalachian culture, turning out many beautiful works of art that was mostly self-taught. God blessed her with this talent and she gave it back to her friends and family not as for monetary gain, but through the love of giving. MR. GAZLE " SHORTY" PUSKAS, JR., 70, of Wayne, W.Va. went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 29, 2012. Gazle was retired from the Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District and was a Deacon at Steele Memorial Freewill Baptist Church, East Lynn. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Virginia Puskas; one daughter, Angela Forth and husband Russell of Huntington, W.Va.; two sons, Rob Puskas and wife Doodle of Mooresville, N.C., and David Scott Puskas and wife Shellie of Russell, Ky.; eight grandchildren, Justin, Sara, Raleigh, Brittani, Tabitha, Nikki, Wendi, and Branden; and three great-grandchildren, Bradrik, James, and Caylee. ERMA LORENE BLACK GOODMAN, 87, of Huntington, WV passed away Sunday January 29, 2012 at the home of her niece whom she raised, Sheila Jo Black Humphreys. She was the daughter of the late Martin Everett and Della Edmunds Black. She was also preceded in death by her husband Olis Goodman in 1988 and also preceded in death by seven brothers, Amos, James, Terman, Walter, Everett, Mervin and Charles and six sisters, Dolly, Stella, Addie, Melcie, Rosa and Oma. Survivors include Sheila Jo and Charles Humphreys of New Haven, WV a great niece whom she raised, Tammy Lorraine Fulks Falla and her children Madison, MacKenzie, and Morgan Falla of Miramar, Fl., and was loved by a host of nieces and nephews. MAXWELL " NOKIE" COBURN, JR., 71, of Ceredo, W.Va., went home to be with his Savior on Sunday, January 29, 2012. He passed away at King' s Daughters' Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. Mr. Coburn was born in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late Milford Maxwell and Leatha Jane Moore Coburn. He was preceded in death by two brothers John and Curt Coburn. Mr. Coburn was a sheet metal worker with National Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 98 of Columbus, Ohio and International Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 24 of Dayton, Ohio. He attended Jefferson Avenue Church of God in Huntington, WV, and also attended Faith Christian Assembly in Flatwoods, Ky. He was an Army veteran and also served eleven years with the Army National Guard.
