DONALD "BILLY" O'DELL, 69, of Ceredo, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington, W.Va. He was born July 18, 1943, in Huntington, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his father Clarence O'Dell and step-father Robert Johnson. He was a retired electrician from Owens-Illinois and Pepsi Company in Nitro, W.Va. He was a member of Vinson Memorial Christian Church. He was an avid golfer, Golden Gloves boxing coach, and a boxing coach for the American Legion Post #93, Kenova, W.Va. He is survived by his loving wife and devoted caregiver Dottie O'Dell; his daughter, the pride and joy of his life, Marcie O'Dell (Pressley) Stacks of Huntington, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Logan, Greyson and Carson, that always seemed to put a smile on his face; his mother Dorothy O'Dell Johnson of Huntington, W.Va.; a very loving and devoted brother Roger (Marsha) O'Dell of Winfield, W.Va.; one sister Donna (Bill) Hazelett of Lavalette, W.Va.; two nieces, Carmen (Phillip) McConnell and Justina (Rob) Adkins; and one nephew Dustin (Lindsay) O'Dell. The family would like to express a special thanks to his best friend Raymond Pollard, Don Harvey and Ben Chambers; to the staff of the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House and doctors who provided such great care. Mr. O'Dell's family has chosen organ donation to the Brain Injury Institute in hopes of furthering research and discovering cures. ROBERT CAROL KIRK, 40, of Wayne, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 2, 2013. Born December 6, 1972 in Huntington, W.Va., he was an auto mechanic and loved working in Pittstopin Racing. One brother, Reuben Gideon Kirk, III preceded him in death, along with his step-grandfather, Boyd Justice. Survivors include his parents, Reuben Gideon Kirk of Barboursville, W.Va., and Connie Belle Santmyre Justice and her husband Boyd Jr. of Wayne; his loving wife, Alisha Kirk; two sons, Chance Edward Kirk and Wyitt Kirk; one sister, Thresa O’Brian; two neices, Shana O’Brian and Alana O’Brian; step grandmother Christine Justice, all of Wayne; and a host of friends and family too numerous to mention. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2012 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Pastor Buck Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in the Justice Cemetery. CAROLYN FAYE "SUSIE" SIMPKINS ROWE, 68, of Ashland, Ky., formerly of Ceredo, W.Va., died Thursday, May 2, 2013, at her home. She was born April 5, 1945, in Wayne, W.Va., a daughter of the late Noah M. Simpkins, and her mother and stepfather, Mary "Jackie" and Jim Reynolds of Catlettsburg, Ky. She had been a teacher at Ashland Community College in Ashland, Ky. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Rowe. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kim (Andy) Bass of Harrodsburg, Ky.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff (Dawn) Ward of Canon City, Colo., and David (Tamie) Graham of Ashland; stepchildren, Jeff (Debbie) Rowe of Lavalette, W.Va., and Amy (Mark) Robinson of Ceredo, W.Va.; two brothers, Carl Simpkins and Noah Simpkins Jr.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of other family. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova. KATHRYN BLANCHE WRIGHT JORDAN, 96, of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Friday, May 3, 2013, at Clark's Personal Care Home in Wayne. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington, W.Va. She was born June 19, 1916, at Winfield, W.Va., a daughter of the late Harry Hamilton and Mary Josephine Howell Wright. She was a homemaker and member of Baptist Temple in Huntington. Her husband, Wesley Vernon Jordan; two sisters, Marion Scott and Lois Morris; and a brother, Harry H. Wright Jr., also preceded her in death. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Barbara Harshbarger (Bob); and a stepson, Tom Jordan (Diane), all of Huntington; three sisters, Charlotte Nagle and Elaine Webster (Jim), all of Wayne, W.Va., and Carolyn Neale of Summerville, S.C.; three brothers, Curtis Wright (Jolene) of Locey, Wash., Bruce Wright (Lova) and Larry Wright (Gerry), all of Huntington; five grandchildren, Todd, Matt, Amy, Bradley and Stacey; and six great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation or procession to the cemetery. The family extends special thanks to Naomi and Rhoda for their loving care. Memorial contributions may be made to Baptist Temple. RODNEY DALE "SATCH" WALLIN, 75, of Kenova, W.Va., died Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. He was born March 19, 1938, in Kenova, a son of the late Russell W. and Naomi Thorn Wallin. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Rodney had been employed by Airstech. He was an honorary member of the Kenova Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a past member of the City of Kenova Fire Department where he had served as the Fire Chief. Rodney was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He is survived by his beloved wife Patricia Hope Browning Wallin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa (Jeremy) Stevenson of Proctorville, Ohio and Melissa (Mike) Labruzzy of Portage, Mich.; one grandson, Ethan Stevenson; four granddaughters, Hannah, Sarah and Becca Stevenson and Molly Ryan; one sister, Texie Sue Moore, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the funeral home with Rev. REBECCA LYNN MILLS QUEEN, 64, of Huntington, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord our Savior Friday, May 3, 2013. A celebration of her life will be held at the Reger Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday May 11, 2013, at 11 a.m. and will be officiated by Minister Jana K. Stoner assisted by her husband Ryan C. Stoner, Reverend Hubert Harvey, Pastor Jamie Gump and Reverend Dean Borgmeyer of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Rebecca was born on Nov. 17, 1948, a daughter of George Alfred Mills Jr. and the late Betty Ellen Stafford Mills. Rebecca is survived by her husband, Larry Preston Queen; a daughter, Stacy Lynn Queen; and a son, Ryan Matthew Queen and his wife Andrea Michelle Queen and their children, a grandson, Jacob Ryan Queen, and a granddaughter, Taryn Makenzie Queen. Rebecca retired after more than 40 years of teaching from the Cabell County Board of Education. SUSAN CAROL CHARLES, 53, of Point Pleasant, WV passed away on May 3, 2013 at the Pleasant Valley Hospital. She was born on June 5, 1959 in Louisa, KY and was the daughter of Glen William Dean and Nellie Mae (Hatten) Dean Gilkerson. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother Gary Dean. She is survived by her Grandmother, Garnet Hatten, her mother Nellie, her daughter Jody M. Deering, and her son Glen M. (Charla) Charles. Also surviving her brothers: Glendall and Kevin Dean of Prichard, WV, her companion, Charles Anthony Walden and her five grandchildren: Ricky Dean, Kristen Dean, Glen Anthony Charles, Devon Deering and Rayne Charles. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 2 PM with Rev. Roy Akers officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services. LARRY "JOE" DAMRON, 74, of Fort Gay, W.Va., passed away in his loving wife's arms and his children by his side Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. He was born Sept. 23, 1938, in Amherstdale, W.Va., to the late James Nibert and Mary Browning Damron. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Tyree and Sandra Wellman. Joe was a Navy veteran and served at the Naval Security Station in Washington, D.C. He retired from General Motors in 1994, with 35 years service as a machine repairman. He was a former member of the Taylor Town Community Church for over 20 years, and a member of the Fort Gay Baptist Church. He was the chairman of the Fort Gay High School Golf Tournament for 13 years. Surviving is his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Jo Perry Damron of Fort Gay, W.Va.; son, Larry Jeff and Dawn Damron of Lexington, Ky.; daughter, Johnna Leigh Damron-Downs and Steve of Fort Gay, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Arin Damron, Zachary James Damron and Katie Grace Damron, all of Lexington, Ky.; brothers, John Nelson Damron of Granite City, Ill., Nibert "Hawk" Damron II and Frances of Grove City, Ohio, and Thomas Earl Damron of Huntington, W.Va.; sister, Linda Faye Kelly and Aubrey of Satellite Beach, Fla. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Young Funeral Home Chapel with pastor Tim Preston officiating. Burial will follow in the Ratiliff Cemetery, Bromley Ridge, Fort Gay, W.Va. GLENNA D. STEPHENS WILLIAMS, 83, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Wayne, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 4, 2013. She was born April 1, 1930 in Wayne County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late George Menis Stephens and Violet Cyrus Stephens. Her husband Thomas Williams also preceded her in death along with one son, Johnny Menis Napier; grandson Bobby Baker; three brothers, Charley Stephens, Argene Stephens, and Ricky Stephens; three sisters, Beverly Watts, Dianna Lambert, and Delores Parsley; and nephew Jeffrey Stephens. Glenna was a member of World Harvest Church, Columbus, and loved flowers, gardening, and keeping a tidy yard. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, two daughters, Brenda Springer and her husband Robert, Calista Laurick and Scott Bryant, all of Columbus, Oh.; six grandchildren, Johnny Rhinehart and his wife Ann, Christopher Rhinehart and his wife Wendy, Russell Cawthern, Dorenda Knight and her husband Danny, Brian Springer and his wife Christal, and Jay Springer and his wife Kim; and 16 great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Helen Weber and her husband Paul of Picherington, Oh., and Joyce Jones and her husband Kenneth of Huntington, W.Va.; seven brothers, Paul Stephens and his wife Edith, Dallas Stephens and his wife Connie, Raymond Stephens and his wife Barbara, Adolphis Stephens and his wife Barbara, Silas Stephens and his wife Dorothy, all of Wayne, Michael Stephens and his wife Donna of Maryville, Oh., and Donald Stephens of Wayne; and nieces and nephews too numerous to mention. BRAINARD OTIS ADKINS, 84, of Barboursville, W.Va., formerly of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, with Rev. James V. Butcher and Rev. John Sauvage. Burial will follow at Community Memorial Gardens at Wayne. He was born February 2, 1929, at East Lynn, W.Va., a son of the late Harvey and Ella Jackson Adkins. Brainard was a self-employed contractor and had worked for 13 years at the former Kaiser Aluminum Plant in Ravenswood. He also had served with the Army Reserves. His sisters Delores Webb and Blanche Russell and brothers Norman, Gary, Gorman and Gelious Adkins and Ralph Stephens, also preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Malinda Ann Burgess Adkins; a daughter Leeann Adkins of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons, Allen Brainard Adkins (Jean) of Jamesville, N.Y., and Brainard "Willie" Adkins, II (Johnna) of Wayne; three grandchildren, Crystal Adkins, Amy Adkins and Lora Beth Pullin; three great-grandchildren, Logan Ashby, Cameron Pullin and Kaitlyn Pullin; two sisters, Sherma Ferguson of Columbus, Ohio and Joyce Roach of Richmond, Ky.; four brothers, Jay Adkins of Wayne, W.Va., Seldon Adkins of Columbus, Ohio, Orville Adkins of Huntington, W.Va., and Mike Adkins of Chesapeake, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. MARY ELIZABETH BILLUPS THACKER, 97, died peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Wayne Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wayne, WV. Elizabeth was a lifelong resident of Wayne County, born at Tabor’s Creek to her parents, Fred and Clara Billups. The family moved to Kenova when Elizabeth was young and she remained there throughout her life. She was a sister to Thomas and Frank Billups, Dorothy Rutherford, Stella Wollerton, Ruth Chambers, Helen Wilson, and Anna Henderson, all who preceded her in death. Elizabeth was a graduate of Ceredo-Kenova High School. She was married to Paul Thacker and was part owner of Thacker’s Variety Store in Kenova. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of First Baptist Church of Kenova. Surviving her is her son, John Thacker of Winter Haven FL and his wife, Mary. Over the past several years, her niece, Lynn Hurt and family, have taken care of her needs. Services will be held at Rollins Funeral Home, Kenova, WV, on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 2:00PM. Visitation will be held from 12:00 – 2:00PM on the same day. Burial will be at Dock’s Creek Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at Wayne Nursing and Rehabilitation and Sweet Run Assisted Living for their care of Elizabeth over the past years.
On Sunday, May 5, 2013, the Lord took VICKERS WATTS SHORE home to glory after injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident. Vic was born on December 2, 1962, in Huntington, West Virginia, being 50-years 5-months and 3-days old. Vic was preceded in death by two grandparents, Margaret Nichols and Nollis Ann Corder, a brother-in-law Jack Adkins, one cousin George Scott Shore and one aunt Eunice Shore. Vic was also preceded in death by his canine companion Sissy. He is survived by his parents William Locke Shore and Glenna VanHoose Shore of Huntington, W.Va.; his wife Sue Thompson Shore and step-daughter Katey Thompson McCloney (Douglas McCloney), and his father-in-law Dr. Douglas Thompson of Morehead, Ky. He was also the proud step-grandfather of little Douglas McCloney, III, of Morehead, Ky. He also leaves behind two sisters, Jacqueline Shore Courts of Kenova, W.Va., and Jennie Shore Watkins (Ronnie) of Corbin, Ky.; one brother Paul Sidney Shore (Donna) of Chesapeake, Ohio; two nephews, David Christopher Adkins (Jami) of Ironton, Ohio and Caleb Watkins of Corbin, Ky.; one niece, Sarah Brittany Courts of Kenova, W.Va. He is also survived by three uncles, George Hansford Shore of Huntington, W.Va., Jim Corder (Susie) of Ceredo, W.Va., and Michael Reynolds (Sheila) of Huntington, W.Va.; and a cousin, William Hansford Shore (Brenda) of Huntington, as well as a host of other friends and family members who mourn is passing. Vic was an employee of Emerson in Morehead, Ky., as a machinist and welder. Visitation will be conducted at Reger Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, with the funeral service following on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at 1 p.m., with visitation from noon up to the funeral hour on Wednesday. Pastor Don Scott of Waverly Road Baptist Church and Elder Ronnie Watkins of Marshes Siding Baptist Church, Marshes Siding, Ky., will be officiating. KAY ELLEN MERRITT, 73, of Huntington, wife of Barry G. Merritt, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Cornerstone Hospital. She was born June 18, 1939, in Oelwein, Iowa, a daughter of the late Roy Victor and Ellinor Maurer Hebrank. She was a former teacher, who specialized working with the deaf in the Logan and Wayne County Schools. In addition to her husband she is survived by two daughters, Mai E. Merritt and Cari L. Merritt of Huntington; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kem E. and Bobbie Merritt of Ashville, Ohio, Jon E. and Mary Merritt of Chicago, Ill., and Geoff B. and Candy Merritt of LaGrange Park, Ill.; five grandchildren, Benjamin Merritt, Thomas Merritt, Jessica Rose Merritt, True Ann Merritt and Bailey Marie Merritt; a sister and brother-in-law, Gail and Scott Younkin of Port Angeles, Wash.; and a brother and sister-in-law, David and Janice Hebrank of Hubbord, Iowa. CHARLES WALKER FERGUSON, IV, of Lavalette, W.Va., died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at his residence following a brief illness. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Michael Dillon. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Wayne, W.Va. He was born July 14, 1953, in Huntington, W.Va., the eldest son of the late Judge C.W. Ferguson, III and Phyllis Jeanne Shumaker Ferguson. Walker was a graduate of Wayne High School and WVU College of Law. He was a retired attorney and partner in Ferguson & Ferguson Law Firm. Walker presently operated "Hillbilly Que" Catering Service and was a member of Harmony Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include his brother Milton J. Ferguson and wife Lynn of Wayne, two nephews, Park and Joseph Ferguson and a niece Elizabeth Ferguson, all of Wayne; and a host of special friends. We invite all of you who loved Walker to join us in a celebration of the wonderful life that he lived from noon until 2 p.m. on Friday, at which time the service will begin. Beloved husband, father, and "Papaw", WILLIE D. ROBERTSON, 65, of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Monday, May 6, 2013 at his residence. He was born July 12, 1947 to the late Opie Lawrence Robertson and Louise O. Burdette Robertson. Willie served our country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife, Linda Robertson; two sisters, Patricia Napier, and Judy Hall; one son, David; daughters Tiffany, Jessica, and Brookie; and 11 grandchildren. BETTY JO PRICE NICELY, 66, of Louisa, Ky. passed away Tuesday, May 7,2013 at Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa, Ky. She was born May 4, 1947 in Louisa, Ky. a daughter of the late Haskel and Martha Helen Stone Price. She was a homemaker, and attended First United Methodist Church. Survivors include, her husband, Joseph Nicely of Greenup, Ky.; three daughters, Rachelle Shepherd of Hanover, In.; Nikki Cannatelli of Lake Mary, Fl.; Marti Fairchild of Louisa, Ky.; four Grandchildren; one brother, Mark Price of Ashland, Ky.; two sisters, Jan Fultz of Ashland, Ky.; Susie Chambers of Louisa, Ky. BAYLESS E. CHINN, 77, of Kenova, W.Va., loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at his home. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Prince of Peace Freewill Baptist Church by Pastor Phillip Warren. Burial will follow at Woodmere Memorial Park. Bayless was a retired stationary engineer at Owens-Illinois with over 34 years of service, and a veteran of the WV Army National Guard. Bayless was born on September 9, 1935, in Cabell County, W.Va., the son of the late Bayless and Elsie Amanda Wilson Chinn. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Nevorah Linderman. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Glenna Robertson Chinn; two daughters and sons- in-law, Jennifer and Bob Lovins of Kenova, W.Va., and Deborah and Carlos Ball of Huntington; and one son, Stephen Chinn of Kenova, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Emily and Matthew Lovins and Kelly and Chad Ball; seven great-grandchildren, Austin, Alexa, Alijah and Lyla Ball, Kaylin, Cameron and Corbin Lovins; a host of friends and family. DOROTHY FERGUSON PRATT NAPIER, 96, of Kenova, W.Va., died Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. She was born March 26, 1917, in Wayne County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Freelin and Effie Ferguson. Dorothy retired from the U. S. Government after 30 years of service. She was a member of the Twentieth Street Baptist Church in Kenova. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her first husband Victor L. Pratt, Sr.; her second husband John K. Napier; a brother, Clyde E. Ferguson; one daughter, Iris Jean Arthur and one great-grandson, Alan Leist. She is survived by four daughters and one son-in-law, Virginia Gower of Cave City, Ky., Dorothy Cash and Doris and Harry Surface, all of Pulaski, Va., and Alice Douglas of Ceredo, W.Va.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Victor L., Jr., and Vanessa Pratt of Kenova and Charles D. Pratt of Fort Mill, S.C.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Grace Ferguson of Patroit, Ohio and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lola Shy of Bluefield, W.Va., and Elizabeth L. and Luther Stewart of Louisville, Ky. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova. BETTY JO REYNOLDS passed away peacefully Tuesday May 7, 2013, while under hospice care at Palmetto Health Center in Columbia, South Carolina. Mrs. Reynolds was a life-long resident of West Virginia, having been born in Salt Rock, West Virginia, on January 23, 1927. She was the youngest daughter of William Ellis and Mary Jane Gill Carter. Mrs. Reynolds was a graduate of Barboursville High School, Barboursville, West Virginia. She married Wallace A. Reynolds of Huntington, West Virginia. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Reynolds was an administrator for the International Nickel Company in Huntington, West Virginia. She resided in West Virginia until 2006, when she moved to South Carolina to live near her daughter, Marsha Lipscomb. Mrs. Reynolds was preceded in death by her husband Wallace A. Reynolds and her eleven brothers and sisters. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Michael Lipscomb of Chapin, South Carolina and her son and daughter-in-law Wallace, Jr., and Shelia Reynolds of Bartow, Florida. Mrs. Reynolds also was blessed with four grandchildren, Joshua Lipscomb and his spouse Melissa Julian of Raleigh, North Carolina, Ramie Lipscomb and her spouse Paul Matthew Harris of Chapin, South Carolina, Peter Benjamin Reynolds and his fiancée Michelle Walker of Northfield, Ohio, Matthew C. Reynolds and his spouse Viva Nordberg of Greenville, North Carolina, and six great grandchildren, Allison Reynolds, John Wallace Kovach, Fiona Reynolds, Carter Lipscomb, Mackenzie Lipscomb and Tristan Harris. Mrs. Reynolds was laid to rest alongside her husband, Wallace, in the Good Shepherd Mausoleum at White Chapel Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, May 14. A celebration of her life will be held by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Chapin, South Carolina, on Saturday June 1, 2013. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Riley Dillon Sr.; two sons, William Riley Dillon Jr. and Everett Dillon; three daughters, Gracie Stultz, Lola Taylor and Oma Straub; grandchildren, Billy Robertson, Scott Straub, Carolyn Fry, Teddy Joe McConnell, Dennis Fosgate and Yvonne Day; sons-in-law, Willard Stultz, Roy Robertson and Leo Straub; a daughter-in-law, Elsie Dillon; five brothers, Isaac, William, Sherman, Jeff and Blackburn May; and four sisters, Pearl Dillon, Georgia Vance, Lola Lackey and Janie Prince. Surviving Wilda are three daughters and sons-in-law, Antha Robertson, Ola and James Nicholson, and Bessie and Joe McConnell; eight sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Faye, Dewey, John and Mary Jo, Henry and Martha, Jeff and Yvonne, Dennis and Billie Joe, Jeryl Paul and Faye, and Michael and Deloris Dillon; and two daughters-in-law, Trula and Kelly Dillon. Also surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Causby and Hayes Stanley. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great- great-grandchildren and great-great- great-grandchildren. SUSAN PARSONS, 82, of Huntington passed away peacefully on May 8, 2013, at Midland Meadows Assisted Living in Ona, W.Va. She was born Hazel Jo Bailey and later nicknamed "Susan" by her grandmother. She was the daughter of the late Clarence Victor Bailey and Blanche Fischbach Bailey of Kenova, W.Va. Susan was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Jess; and brothers, Clarence Clifford "Mike" Bailey, Earl Bailey and John Bailey; and a sister, Pauline Thompson. She is survived by a sister, Eleanor Roach; a brother, Larry Bailey; and a special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carol and Fred Rodgers, who reside in Columbus, Ohio. She is also survived by a daughter, Lynn Hanna and husband John; and sons, Jonathon M. Parsons and wife Melissa, and Jeffrey B. Parsons. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jessica and Scott Duernberger, Nathan Sparks, Amber Hanna, John Matthew Hanna and Kelly Dew; and great-grandchildren, Voss and Odin Duernberger and Thor and Iris Hanna. During her lifetime, she was a lover of all living things. She took in under her care many pets and neighborhood children. Her love of decorating and remodeling led her and Jess to move multiple times while always enjoying the challenge of making a home beautiful. With all her kindness, she could not be misinterpreted as a push-over. She was a strong-willed woman and it was especially apparent when it came to card playing. Her competitiveness made her quite a challenge to defeat at bridge, rummy, cribbage or set back. When alone, she felt comfort in playing Solitaire. Susan will be missed by all that knew her for her beauty both inside and out. Kenova, W.Va., native LEONARD A. KIRK, 74, of Galion, Ohio, died Wednesday, May 8, 2013, unexpectedly after a sudden illness at home with his loving wife, Joyce at his side. Born Sept. 12, 1938, in Louisa, Ky., he was the son of the late Leonard M. and Geneva Davis Kirk who resides in Galion. Leonard married his high school sweetheart, Joyce A. McComas, on Sept. 1, 1956, three months after their graduation from Buffalo High School in Kenova, W.Va., where during his senior year he threw six no-hitters as a 16-year-old pitcher on the baseball team. Known in the sports pages as "Fireball Kirk" he was drafted by the New York Giants. He worked 42 years at Galion Manufacturing/Dresser as a welder and assembler, retiring in 1998. After retirement, Leonard worked part-time at the Galion Public Library, maintaining the facility and grounds. Leonard managed Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. He was active in the Masonic order and Christ United Methodist Church. Even though Leonard led a busy and active life, his number one priority was always his family, his faith and his friends. He lived life to the fullest. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Shelly Kirk of Galion, Ohio, and Jeff and Laurie Kirk of Powell, Ohio; and nine grandchildren. She was born Oct. 20, 1924, in Wayne County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Marion and Flora Adkins Maynard. Marie was a member of the Route 60 Freewill Baptist Church and she was a retired waitress from the Chatterbox Restaurant in Kenova. Besides her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar T. Robinson; one sister, Freda Mae Young; one son-in-law, Gerald Dalton; and one grandson, Gary L. Robinson II. Marie is survived by one daughter, Flora Mae Dalton of Huntington; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Lester G. (Mae) Robinson of Worthington, Ky., Gary L Robinson of Kenova and Larry G. (Kelly) Robinson of Kenova; one brother and sister-in-law, Dallas G. (Janet) Maynard of Ceredo; and several nieces and nephews. LUTIE BELL YORK, 48, of Louisa, KY went to be with her Lord on Friday May 10, 2013 following a sudden illness. Lutie was born Aug. 27, 1964 at Louisa, the daughter of William and Betty Thompson Cook. She was a cashier at the Louisa Walmart and member of the Garden of Hope Church. She is preceded in death by a son Dallas York. RAYMOND EDSELL CYRUS, 78, of Huntington, was called home by his Lord to rejoin his mother for Mother's Day on Sunday, May 12, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Edward and Armilda Lowe Cyrus; brothers Lemmie Lowell and Charles Wallace Cyrus; and sister Ivalee Faye Earls. He is survived by his sons Troy Lance Cyrus (Deb) of Hamilton, Ohio, and Gregory Todd Cyrus (Sheri) of Crestview, Fla.; grandchildren Nicholas Troy Cyrus of Louisville, Chad Lance Cyrus of Hudson, Ohio, and Sierra Beth Cyrus of Louisville; Joshua, Andrew, Jacob Lee and Jenna Marie Cyrus of Crestview, Fla.; great-grandchildren Jade Madison Johnson and Juliann Ottesen of Hamilton, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews. He was lovingly cared for by Pamela Sturgis and, in more recent years, by staff at River's Bend Nursing Home in Burlington, Ohio. Edsell served his country in the United States Marine Corps. After military service, he returned to Huntington and married Shelby Jean Houchin (estranged). He served as a Huntington police officer and was later employed by Armco (AK) Steel in Ashland, where he remained until his retirement. Edsell spent time pursuing his passion as both an amateur and professional boxing coach. He served as the coach for the VFW Post No. 1064 team and was chosen as the first permanent state coach for the West Virginia team that participated at the National Golden Gloves. He was a member of numerous service and philanthropic organizations such as the VFW, DAV, Elks, Moose, Eagles and FOP. He also enjoyed playing shuffleboard and watching Marshall football. Funeral services will be conducted at Reger Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, with Rev. Bill Holley officiating. Burial will follow at Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. RANDALL LEE FRYE, 54, of Ranger, W.Va., departed this life on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. He was born May 29, 1958, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, a son of Charity Williamson Frye and the late Lawson Frye of Ranger. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Mitchell (Micky) Frye; and his stepfather, Ezra Vance. Randall enjoyed spending time with his family and spending time outdoors, hunting and fishing. She was born September 16, 1920 in Webb, W.Va. a daughter of the late Nathan and Hester Moore Evans. She was a homemaker, she was a member of Jehova Witness. IRENE KATHLEEN ROWE NEWTON, born April 12, 1929, went to be with the Lord May 16, 2013. She was preceded in death by her loving Husband Ernest Newton. She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Sue & Denny Coleman and Patricia Diann & Carroll Ferris; four grandchildren: Stephen Gregory Coleman, Nathaniel Scott Coleman, Patricia Denise Coleman and Jennifer Sue and Brian Sexton; three great-grandchildren: Jason Murdock, Cody Murdock and Brady Cheek. She attended Vinson Memorial Christian Church and was a volunteer at the Westmoreland Senior Citizen Center. She was also a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. GLENNA AVONELL McKEAND WELLMAN, 84, of Kenova, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013 in Wayne Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Garrett’s Creek Church of Christ by Evangelist Wyn Baker. Burial will be at the Guy Plymale Cemetery. Glenna was a member of the Garretts Creek Church of Christ and was a great example to all those who knew her while she lived each day for the Lord. Glenna retired from the Lavalette Public Service District where she had served as the general manager. She was born December 14, 1928 to the late James Willis McKeand and Ruth Johnson McKeand Leonard. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Wilma Jean Nichols; two brothers-in-law, Larry Wellman and Joe Shy; three sisters-in-law, Bernice Maynard, Betty Spence and Carol Cisco and several nieces and nephews. Survivors include her beloved husband of 66 years, Billy J. Wellman; four adoring children, one daughter and son-in-law Joe and Patsy Crisel of Kenova; three sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Debby Wellman of Prichard, Rick and Pat Wellman of Kenova and Dale and Terri Wellman of Springdale, Arkansas; eleven much loved grandchildren and sixteen precious great grandchildren. Glenna is also survived by three sisters, Willa Dean Allen, Alfreda Wade and Lillian Stephenson; one sister-in-law, Wanda Wellman and many loving nieces and nephews. Glenna was always kind, compassionate and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. REV. LYLE MARCUM, 84, of Huntington, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 17, 2013 at the Cabell Huntington Hospital. Born March 16, 1929 at Puritan, WV, he was the son of the late Wallace Marcum of Kermit, WV & Herma Marcum of Huntington, WV. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Hill Marcum; four brothers: Leslie, Welby, Wirt, Wallace (Wad); two sisters: Mabel Hunter and Joan Queen; and a half-brother, Orville. After graduating from Burch High School, Lyle was employed at Kiser Aluminum. He later focused his life on pastoring the Hubbell Church of God. He attended the annual General Assembly for the Church of God Association and enjoyed a trip to the Holy Land. Lyle was also a long-time member of the Tenth Avenue Church of God in Huntington. Lyle spent many years assisting his brother, Wirt and nephew Gary Wirt Marcum in overseeing their grocery businesses at Taylorville and Matewan, WV. He and his wife Phyllis served as assistant directors for Red Man FLW where they orchestrated professional fishing tournaments. They traveled the northern states from Virginia to Vermont. He also participated in Anglers for Christ, a church service conducted prior to each tournament. Lyle was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing with his nephews and friends. He looked forward to fishing and being in the company of his nephew, Mike. They recently spent a day together fishing at Yatesville Lake. Lyle opened his home to so many people over the years, helping care for his mother, wife, sister and a host of family members. As Lisa, Regina and David relocated from Delbarton, he invited them to live with him during their transition to Huntington and treated them as his own children. His legacy was caring and serving others in the name of Jesus Christ. He believed in giving more than he received. Whether it was baking hams and cakes for family reunions or sharing produce from his garden, he gave with love and compassion. Lyle’s family Bible is filled with his handwritten notes about scripture. He loved to spend time in the word of God and serving the Lord, which was taught to him early in life by his Christian mother. He is survived by his nieces and nephews of whom he loved as sons and daughters: Mike (Annette) Marcum of Taylorville; Byron (Patricia) Marcum of Pie; Sharon (Bill) Shannon of Taylorville; Lisa and Regina Marcum of Huntington; David Marcum of Proctorville, OH; Cheryl (Larry) Moore of Tennessee; Brenda (Gary) Runyon of Tennessee; Eddie Queen of Charleston; Larry (Dreama) Queen of OH; Roy Glenn (Merriam) Marcum of Huntington; half-brother, Dwight Marcum of Kermit; and a host of family and friends. BOB W. COPLEY, a 90 year-old native of Beauty, Ky., longtime resident of Wayne County, W.Va., and current resident of Mobile, Ala., passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013. Mr. Copley owned and operated Copley's Market in Wayne County for over 45 years. He was a man of deep faith and a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Copley served in the Pacific Rim during World War II as a member of the United States Navy and was recently a member of the 9th Honor Flight, a program which honors World War II veterans by transporting them to Washington, D.C., to view the World War II Memorial. Mr. Copley is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth E. Copley; children, Fred W. Copley (Brenda) of Huntington, W.Va., and Jill Copley Neubauer (Fred) of Mobile, Ala.; and two grandchildren, Alison Copley Neubauer and David Frederick Neubauer. PAUL REED DYER passed peacefully to his home in Heaven, Wednesday May 22, 2013. Paul was born June 22, 1933, in Wayne, W.Va. He was preceded home to Heaven by his wife, Janet; his parents, Delbert and Malta; three brothers, Jonnie, Oscar (Jr.), and Walter; and four sisters, Mattie, Mildred, Phyllis and Lorene. ERVIN W. HULETT, 86 of Catlettsburg, KY passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Kings Daughter’s Medical Center in Ashland, KY. He was born on November 17, 1926 in Wayne County, WV, a son of James Alford and Lilly Mae (Howell) Hulett. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Rev. Benny Hulett, Charles A. Hulett, James Roy Hulett, Kathleen Marsh, Myrtle Lambert, Carl Hulett, Cornelius Hulett, Eddie Hulett and Ethel Marie Hulett. ANNA MARCUM COPLEY, 81 of Crum, West Virginia passed away Friday, May 24, 2013 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia. She was born on February 19th, 1932 to the late Thomas Marcum and Betty Meade Marcum in Logan, West Virginia. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, W.C "Buddy" Copley, two sisters, Shirley Goeller and Lou Spaulding, two brothers, Leon Thomas Marcum Jr. and Randolph Marcum Sr., two nephews, Thomas Marcum and Sherman Spaulding Jr. and special friend, Wayne Justice. Anna is survived by one sister, Faye (Bert) Gillman of Johnstown, Ohio, sister-in-law, Dolly Marcum of Crum, West Virginia, Brother-in-law, Sherman Spaulding, and ten nieces and nephews, Rusty Gillman, Randy (Vicki) Gillman, Sarah Ann Marcum, Debbie Weddington, Mark (Betty Kaye) Marcum, Randolph (Adonna) Marcum Jr., Teresa Ann Marcum, Leon Thomas Marcum II, Anthony Lee Marcum and Betty Lois Spaulding. She is also survived by special friends, Kerry (Lydia) Waggoner, Steven (Prudence) Waggoner and David (Beth) Waggoner and many great nieces and nephews. SHARON RAY SOWARDS, 69, of Kenova, WV. passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. She was born December 1, 1943 in Kenova, daughter of the late Ermal C. and Henrietta Skeens Milum. Sharon was a member of the Poplar Street Church of God. Besides her parents she was also preceded in death by two brothers James Franklin and Billy Jack Milum and a special nephew Brian K. Milum. Sharon is survived by her beloved husband Floyd Jay Sowards; one son and daughter-in-law Mark Alan Sowards (Judy) of Barboursville, WV and three loving grandchildren Brittany Stewart and her husband C.J. of Proctorville, Ohio, Brandon Sowards of Venice, Florida and Taylor Sowards of Barboursville, WV. MISS VIOLA GALE HARLESS, 53, of South Point, Ohio, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013, at St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born Aug. 21, 1959, in Huntington, W.Va., the daughter of Woodrow Wilson and Juanita (Pauley) Harless. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Phyllis Porter and Barbara Harless; and her brother, Homer; and nephew, Tyler Walters. He was born on Saturday at 1:37a.m. and went into the arms of the Lord at 3:30 a.m. In addition to his parents he is survived by Maternal grandparents, George and Sharon Newsome of Louisa, KY. and Ralph Jr. and Christie Dent of Fort Gay, and Paternal grandfather, Tim Holland of Genoa; Maternal great grandmother, Amanda Slone and Paternal great grandmother Dora Carter. Adam was the great grandson of the late Cecil Slone, Joe Carter, and Ralph and Marie Dent. He has a lot of family who loves him dearly and Adam will be greatly missed. GARY LEE BLACK, 71, of Huntington, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 25, 2013. He was born November 9, 1941 in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Harvey and Plura Skaggs Black. One sister, Deloris Black-Brammer also preceded him in death along with four brothers, Harvie Black Jr., Gene Black, Harold Black, and Darrell Black. Gary had a special love of gospel music and sang in several quartets including the Royal Messengers Quartet, and he attended Trinity Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Gary Black Jr. and his wife Brenda, and William "Billy" Black and his fiancé Robin Neal; one daughter, Denise Kilgore and her husband Ron; six grandchildren, Emily Williams, Marissa Black, Katie Black, Willa Kilgore, John Garrido, and Shawn Garrido; and seven great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Wayne Nursing and Rehabilitation for taking such exceptional care of our Dad. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Pastor Willie May officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service.
REV. DARRELL ROSS, 72 of Seth, WV, formally of East Lynn WV went home to be with the Lord on Sunday May 26, 2013 at the CAMC Memorial Division Hospital, Charleston, WV after a long illness. Darrell was born March 15, 1941 in Wayne County, WV a son of the late Bethel Stiltner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Stella Ross who passed away in June 20, 2010; two brothers, Albert Lee Stiltner,, Kenny Stiltner and one sister Goldie Pierce. Darrell was the Pastor of the Round Bottom Community Church and also worked 25 years in the logging industry. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA having worked from 1958 thru 1987 in the mining industry. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Charles "Tammy" Johnson of Alum Creek, WV; four sons, Randy "Cathy" Ross of South Charleston, Tommy Ross of Racine, Denzil Ross of Seth and Rev. Roger "Jackie" Ross of Seth, brothers, Howard Stiltner of Seth, Glen Stiltner of GA, Gerald Stiltner of East Lynn, David Stiltner of Wayne and Thurel Stiltner of Lavalette, sisters, Delila Davis, Georgia Maynard and Alice Adkins of East Lynn and Joann Pierce of Milton; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Services were held Thursday afternoon at Armstrong Funeral Home in Whitesville WV. Interment followed at Pineview Cemetery Mausoleum in Orgas, WV.
NOAH E. MARCUM, formerly of Wayne County, was born March 13, 1921, in Logan, West Virginia, to Andrew Jackson and Melinda (Damron) Marcum. He died Sunday, May 26, 2013, at his home in Collinsville, Oklahoma, at the age of 92 years. Noah was reared and educated in Logan, West Virginia, before entering the armed forces. He served his country honorably during World War II with the United States Army. Throughout his life, Noah was very proud of his service as well as others who had served their country. He was married June 28, 1946, in Palmeroy, Ohio, to Ruth Miller. They had made their home in Collinsville since 1967. He spent most of his working life as an inspector with North American Rockwell in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Noah was strong in his faith and was an active member of Collinsville Christian Church. He was also a member of the Collinsville VFW and was a 33rd Degree Mason with the Collinsville Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed a variety of pastimes including fishing, hunting, and playing his bass guitar. Loving family members include his son and daughter-in-law, Reuben and Linda Marcum of Tulsa. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Collinsville Christian Church with Pastor Joe T. Anglin and Pastor Bob Haywood. Serving as casket bearers will be Joe Anglin, Ron Mixer, Larry Cloyd, Marty Cloyd, Earl Worley, and Shon Buehler. Committal services and interment will follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Collinsville. (PD-5/26/13) EVA A. CARRICO, 83, of Huntington, widow of Charles E. Carrico of Clarksburg, passed away at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. She was born on July 29, 1929, in Clarksburg, W.Va., a daughter of Italian immigrants, the late Domnick and Immaculate Pacelli Vilone. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Vilone; and a sister, Mary Ann Kurtz. She is survived by her loving daughter, Cynthia, who was also her caretaker; sisters, Rose Muriale, who she worked alongside of at Rocco's, Helen Pinicki, and Margie Knight; a host of nieces and nephews; and her many cats that she loved dearly. Mrs. Carrico was employed at Rocco's Ristorante as a baker, which is owned by her nephew, Rocco Muriale. Earlier in life, she was employed at Owens-Illinois in Clarksburg. Mrs. Carrico was a friend to everyone she met and will be fondly remembered for her delicious baked goods. At her request, there will be no visitation or funeral. A memorial service will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Grafton National Cemetery in Grafton, W.Va. BOOGIE BILL WATTS, 75, of East Lynn, WV, passed away Friday, May 31, 2013 at his residence. He was born February 18, 1938 at East Lynn, WV, a son of the late Tom and Martha Hale Watts. He was a retired laborer in the automotive industry and also for Mobile Arial Towers. He also served in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Opal Watts; and four brothers, John, Chester, Jess and Joe Watts. He is survived by his fiancée, Marsha Stone; seven daughters, Martha Thompson, Tina Watts, Bonnie Watts, Hazel Hodge, Virginia Watts, Angela Watts and Jessica Watts; four sons, Billy Watts, William Watts, Clyde Watts and Thomas Watts; a sister, Sadie Garrett and a brother, Clarence Watts and 8 grandchildren.
