TINA MARIE WEBB CANTER, 36, of Proctorville, Ohio, went to be with the Lord Sunday, September 1, 2013. She was born September 4, 1976, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of Arlie E. Webb and Betty Margaret Napier Webb of Proctorville, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, John and Margaret Napier, and Z.T. and Evie Webb; along with three aunts, one uncle and a cousin. Additional survivors include her husband, Amos Benjamin Canter; a daughter, Alisha Wright of Proctorville, Ohio; a sister, Sabrina Webb; aunts and uncles, Sally Napier, Lois Wiley and husband, Jack, Johnny Napier and wife, Lana; a niece, Samantha Webb, and a nephew, Michael Franklin. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, W.Va. with visitation for family and friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

BILLY DEAN ASHTON, 59, of Wayne, passed away September 2, 2013. He was born April 29, 1954, in San Diego, Calif., a son of the late William Ashton and Marie McGowen. He is survived by his sister, Kim Johnson of Wayne; his best friends, Larry Rice of Wayne and Chuck Walter of Largo, Fla., and a host of family and friends. There will be no visitation or funeral services. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, is in charge of arrangements.

ROSEMARY BALL STEPHENS, 72, of East Lynn, W.Va., died Sept. 2, 2013, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born January 22, 1941 in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late John Allen Ball Sr. and Helen Travis Ball. Her husband Jeffery Menis Stephens also preceded her in death along with one son, Curtis Haynes, and one brother John Allen Ball Jr. She leaves behind two daughters, Violet Pyles and her husband Robbie of East Lynn, and Peggy Sue Ward of Fla.; one son, Carl Haynes and his wife Paula of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two brothers, John "Dickie" Ratcliff of Ga., and Harold "Red" Ratcliff of N.Y.; one sister Phyllis Ball of Ga.; 15 grandchildren, Anna Patrick, Alisha Hiat, Jennifer Haynes, Joshua Ward, Jeremiah Ward, Curtis Ward, Carl Haynes III, Tyesha Wilson, Renee Pyles, Robin Pyles, Rachel Pyles, Branam Thompson, Jeffery Thompson, Chance Thompson, and Chace Thompson; 16 great grandchildren whom she poured out her love to; and many foster children whom she cared for as her own. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2013 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Elder Roger Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Camp Creek. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

DAVID KEITH TABOR, 55, of Wayne died Sept. 3, 2013, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. He was born October 8, 1957 in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Clyde and Hazel Marie Tabor. An infant brother Clyde Tabor Jr., also preceded him in death along with one grandson, Cody Collins. David served proudly in the U.S. Marines and was employed in the construction industry. He leaves behind two daughters, Amanda Tabor of Kenova, W.Va., and Kyla Tabor of Woodward, Ok.; one son, Shane Collins of Ironton, Oh.; and six grandchildren, Elijah, Jenna, Jayleigh, Shayanna, Ellie, and Jonathon "Duke". Also surviving are two brothers, Robert Tabor and his wife Lula of Wayne, and Michael Tabor and his wife Carolyn of Ft. Gay, W.Va. Private burial will be held for family. Johnson Tiller Funeral Home is honored to serve the Tabor family.

SHERRI RENEE WELLMAN, 53, of Fort Gay, WV passed away Wednesday September 4, 2013 following a long illness. Sherri was born December 10, 1959 at Logan, WV, the daughter of Shirley Jean Bragg Wolfe and the late Joe Fred Hayton. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Ericka and Matt Black, two grandchildren Bailee Renee Black and Sydnee Nicole Black, two sisters Joetta Hatfield and Jane Harris, a brother Joseph Hayton, her fiancé Mike Hanna, a special aunt Joyce Ann Sampson. Graveside funeral services will be conducted on Friday September 6th at 6:00 pm at the Gilkerson Cemetery at Prichard, WV with Bro. Darin Fetherolf officiating. Private visitation for the family will be held. Care has been entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home.

DORIS JEAN YOUNG LITTLE, 80, of Kenova, W.Va., died Friday, September 6, 2013, at her home. She was born February 21, 1933, in Catlettsburg, Ky., a daughter of the late Homer C. and Gladys Field Young. Doris was a member of the Crook Chapel Church of God Holiness. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Mack Edward Little. She is survived by one daughter, Anita Jean Fetterhoff and her husband Lance of Mexico, Mo.; two sons, Stephen Edward Little and his wife Connie of Mooresville, Ind., David Bryan Little and Debbie Adkins of Kenova, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; special friends Gary and Brenda Staley and a host of other friends and loved ones. Doris will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at Rollins Funeral Home, Kenova, W.Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Victory Baptist Church, Kenova with Rev. E.R. Houck and Rev. Jerry Shaw officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery. MABEL NYLENE PIERCE, 60 of Huntington, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013. She was born August 24, 1953; the only daughter of Ernest and Betty Jo Maynard Adams. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 11, 2013 from 2 to 4 PM at the Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home. There will be no funeral service. Mabel was a homemaker, a mother, and an aunt to so many that truly loved her. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Burl Sr. and Mamie Ann Maynard, her parents, her brother Tiny Maynard, and her son Little Ralph Thacker. She leaves behind to mourn her loss her son Matthew Thacker and her daughters Yvonne Turpin and Hope (Kevin) Lively. Her sisters: Josephine Wright, Juanita Barnett, Marie Miller, Ramona Miller and Beulahmae Miller and her brothers: Ernest Orville Adams, Eugene Adams, Richard Bartram, Alvis Bradley Maynard and Burl Farley Maynard Jr. Also surviving are her special nieces: Kim Dean, Angela Rene Maynard, Katie Maynard and Kristen Maynard, Krystal Maynard and Kandice Maynard and a special nephews Dennie Adkins and Josh Maynard and many other nieces and nephews; twelve grandchildren: Makailey, James, Sarah, Todd, Travis, Christopher, Adam, Shannah, "JJ", Joseph, Katelynn and Cierra and two great-grandchildren: Matthew Scott and Curtis Yaus and her friend, ex-husband, James Allen Pierce.

THURMAN RAY ADKINS, 58, of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, W.Va., by Brother Willis Mills and Brother Avery Lambert. Burial will follow at Community Memorial Gardens, Wayne. He was born March 15, 1955, at Wayne, a son of the late Edward and Mary Watts Adkins. He was a member of the Spring Valley Freewill Baptist Church. Brothers Orvel and Timothy Adkins also preceded him in death. Survivors include three sisters, Martha Maynard (Arthur) of Lavalette, W.Va., Pamela Adkins and Sharon Thompson, both of Wayne; four brothers, Braxton Adkins (Charlotte) of Huntington, W.Va., Charles Adkins (Kathy) of Dunlow, W.Va., Joseph Adkins and Noah Adkins, both of Wayne; a special sister-in-law, Judy Adkins, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The family extends special thanks to Cabell Huntington Hospital for all the special care given to Thurman and family, and also to Hospice of Huntington, Dr. Becher, Dr. Gillenwater, and the 5-West Oncology nurses. We will miss our special little brother. God is good. God is great. His nephews Ronnie, Chuck, Austin, Sean, Jerry and Jason will serve as pallbearers. MRS. KARLEEN McGINNIS WARNOCK, 91, born November 13, 1921, died of natural causes September 7, 2013, at Madison Park in Huntington. She was the daughter of the late B.C. McGinnis Sr., and Gladys Smith McGinnis of Huntington, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her siblings Harold McGinnis, Maxine McGinnis Ramsey, Bernard McGinnis, and Rupert McGinnis. She is survived by her husband of 63 years William "Bill" E. Warnock and their three children, Malinda Warnock Grubb, Karleen Sue Delph and husband Jerry, and Matthew McGinnis Warnock. She was the loving grandmother to David Grubb, Anne Yon and husband Daniel and their daughters Elia and Luciana, Laura Delph, Andrew Delph and wife Burcu and their daughter Grace, and Jonathan Delph. She is also survived by her brother Kermit E. McGinnis and his wife Dorothy and several nieces and nephews. Karleen was a graduate of Huntington High School and Marshall College class of 1944. Prior to wedding Warnock in 1950, she joined her father in working at The Twentieth Street Bank. She was a lifelong member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband in association with Full Gospel Businessman's Fellowship International for many years. She was a loving wife and mother whose love of the Lord was exemplified in her devotion to her family. She loved to sing praises to God and spiritual songs to her grandchildren, as well as quote favorite scriptures, "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord all ye lands, serve the Lord with gladness come before his presence with singing."Psalm 100. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Huntington. A private family memorial service is planned for October.

BERTHA ELLEN SALMONS, 92, of Fort Gay, W.V. passed away Monday, September 9, 2013 at her home. She was born January 1, 1921 to the late William and Nancy Evans Copley. She was a member of the Silver Creek Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 47years, Frank P. Salmons; sons, William M. Salmons, Roland Franklin Salmons, Franky Salmons, Jarvis Ellis; daughter, Nancy M. Marcum; granddaughters, Rachell and Jacqualine Marcum. Survivors include, Jess Salmons, Shirley Klien, Linda Marcum, Betty Marcum, James Salmons, Laura Swenniny, Barbara Carsner, Janie Salmons, William Salmons, Arbrey Salmons, Brother, Harless Copley, 38 grandchildren, 81 great grandchildren, and a host of many great, great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington W.Va. for there help during this time. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 PM Thursday, September 11, 2013 at Young Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bo Stafford officiating. Burial will follow at the Salmons Cemetery in Webb, W.Va. D. E. "DONALD" MASSIE, 77, of South Point, Ohio, departed this life and went to his Heavenly Home on Monday, September 9, 2013. Don was born September 30, 1935, in Prichard, West Virginia, the son of Willie and Trudy Massie. Don was a hardworking individual whose career with the Norfolk and Southern Railroad spanned 55 years. He belonged to the BLE and UTU (lifetime member) unions and he was a 32nd degree Mason. Don loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and gardener. He was a master of machinery, finding nearly nothing he could not fix. He attended South Point United Methodist Church. Don is survived by the love of his life, Susan Davidson Massie, with whom he shared 44 years of marriage. He leaves four children to cherish his memory, Sharon Massie Johnson and Larry of Huntington. W.Va., Donna Massie of Wayne, Daytona McClain Jarman and Lee of Cayce, South Carolina, and John McClain of Texas; four grandchildren, Jacob Johnson, Carman Johnson, Tanner Jarman and Rhiannon McClain; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Rev. Alan Massie of Lebanon, Va., and John Massie of Wayne, W.Va. Preceding Don in death in addition to his parents, are four brothers, Bill, Freeman, Harold "Boots" and Eugene "Red" Massie, and one sister, Anna Mae Ronk. By Don's wishes, no memorial service will be held. Don proudly donated his body to the Human Gift Registry at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. His wish was that in memory of his life, donations would be made to the South Point United Methodist Church Food Pantry, 202 3rd St. E, South Point, OH 45680, to feed the community's hungry children.

MARY ANN FERGUSON GALLOWAY, age 89, of Westerville, Ohio, formerly of Ceredo, W.Va., passed away Monday, September 9, 2013, at 9 a.m. Born November 7, 1923, in Huntington, W.Va. Daughter of the late Jack and Mary Griffith Ferguson. Devoted mother of Melissa Casoli and her husband Barry and their children Laura (Chad) Hamrick and Joseph Aaron (Tara) Casoli; three great-grandsons, Jack William, Luke Jamison and Ty Alexander Hamrick; sister Marjorie (Harry) Fischer and their children Jack (Karen), Mary Kris (Charlie) Godley and Andrew (Karri); sister-in-law June Ferguson Carver, wife of her late brother, Jack Wayne Ferguson, and their three daughters, Julie, Jane and Jill. Graduate of Ceredo-Kenova High School, Sullins College and The West Virginia University. Ann of painting, garden club, career sports, W.Va. recipes and culture, Bible study, handwork, Senior Center projects, Coca-Cola, bridge player and hostess to children and pets. DAVID LAWSON VARNEY, 73, of Huntington, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, W.Va. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 14, 2013, at the First Baptist Church of Ceredo, Ceredo, W.Va. Burial will follow in Spring Valley Memorial Gardens, Huntington, W.Va. He was born on August 1, 1940, in McAndrews, Kentucky to the late Roary Varney and Lucy Wheeler Varney. David was self-employed owner of Dave's Marine Sales. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Buena Vista Lodge No. 60 in Prichard, W.Va., and El-Hasa Shrine in Ashland, Ky. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved son David Allen Varney and two sisters, Betty Lou Castle and Helen Yvonne Riggs. Surviving is his loving wife of 55 years Betty Sue Tabor Varney; daughter Diana Lynn Blackburn (Larry E.) of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; daughter-in-law Kimberly J. Varney of Huntington, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Brandon D. Nelson (Jayme), Cara Hall (Jeremy) and David Dalton Varney. He is also survived by his beloved great-granddaughter Taylor Nelson and special friends Andy and Paige Nelson. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Ceredo. DON COOK, 69, of Fort Gay, W.Va., died Sept. 13, 2013, at his home. He was born July 4, 1944 at Radnor, WV, to the late Earl and Emmie Rowe Cook. Surviving is one daughter, Tonya Maynard of Kenova, WV.; one son, Clifford Cook of fort Gay, WV.; two brothers, Homer Cook of Piketon, Ohio, and Everet Cook of Mansfield, Ohio; three sisters, Gladys Endicott of Ashland, KY, Lorene Bowen of fort Gay, WV., and Stella Cook of Indiana; Grandchildren, Kendra Maynard and Lake Maynard and one great grandchild, Kaden Maynard. Funeral services were Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Young Funeral Home Chapel at 1 p.m. Visitation was Tuesday till time of services. Burial followed at the Pack Cemetery at fort Gay.

EARNEST GLEN "Shorty" TALBERT, 65, of Wayne, WV, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2013 at his son’s residence in Belington, WV. Funeral services were conducted at Noon Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, WV by rev. Brady Lipscomb. He was born June 13, 1948 in Wayne, WV a son of the late Ray and Eloise Frazier Talbert. "Shorty" was a carpenter and a U.S. Army Veteran. Survivors include a son, Wesley Talbert and fiancé, Stacy Kelley of Belington, WV; a sister, Norma Adkins of Huntington, WV; two brothers, Robert "Bob" Talbert and wife, Terry of Huntington, WV, and Terry Talbert and wife, Gayle of Huntington, WV.

GAIL ADKINS, 60, of Huntington, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 13, 2013. She was born April 27, 1953 in Lincoln County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Floyd and Virginia Jewell Lee Walters McCoy. Also preceding her in death were two sister, Janice Krikorian and Violet Holton; and three brothers, Ricky McCoy, Hershel McCoy, and George McCoy. She leaves behind her husband, Walter Ray Adkins Sr., of Huntington; two daughters, Elizabeth Adkins Amos and her husband Eugene of Huntington, and Sheila Lanham and her husband Ed of Wayne, W. Va.; one son, Walter Ray Adkins Jr. of Huntington; seven beloved grandchildren, Nicholas Graham, Violet Amos, C. J. Lester, Greg McCoy, Kara Lanham, Destiny Amos, and Rebekah Amos; and two great-grandchildren, Rachel Lester and Patience McCoy. Also surviving are two brothers, Larry McCoy of Huntington and Floyd McCoy and his wife Lisa of Hamlin, W.Va.; and one sister, Hallena Hinkle of Fla. Visitation was held for family and friends after 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Johnson Tiller funeral Home.

STEVEN GARRETT HITCHCOCK, 29, of Kenova, W.Va., beloved son of Ricky Eugene and Sandra Lovins Hitchcock, went to meet his heavenly Father on Friday, September 13, 2013. Steven was born October 2, 1983, in Huntington, W.Va. He was a member of the 20th Street Baptist Church in Kenova and a former junior member of the Kenova Volunteer Fire Department. Steven was a former coal miner with Rock Springs Coal, and he was an avid demolition derby race car driver until he was hurt. Steven was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shelly Nicole Hitchcock; maternal grandfather, Roy Lovins; paternal stepgrandfather, Glenn Whitt; and paternal grandfather, Junior Maynard. Besides his parents, Steven is survived by his fiancée, Elizabeth Perry of Kenova; two daughters, Brooklynn Nicole Hitchcock and Jada Rae Perry, both of Kenova; maternal grandmother, Nancy Fraley of Ceredo, W.Va.; paternal grandmother, Pauline Whitt of Ceredo; and paternal grandfather, Leroy (Judy) Hitchcock of Huntington. Steven is also survived by numerous loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Rollins Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Byard and Pastor Hugh Summer officiating. WILLIAM R. KETCHUM, 83, of Port St. John, Fla., formerly of Wayne, W.Va., died September 14, 2013. He was born January 4, 1930 in Wayne W.Va. He was the son of Hugh and Dilla Salmons Ketchum. He was a graduate of Wayne High School and Morehead University where he excelled in football. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, he returned to Vinson High School and subsequently Wayne High School where he was a football coach. He continued his education at Marshall University and earned a master's degree. He went to Florida in 1967 where he was dean and retired as assistant principal at Madison Middle School. He was a member of the Wayne Christian Church. He was married to Barbara Marcum Ketchum for 53 years who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother George Bernard Ketchum. He is survived by his son Mike and wife Belinda Ketchum of Greensboro, N.C.; daughter Kathy and husband Dan Herbst of Merritt Island, Fla.; son Franky Ketchum of Port St. John, Fla.; daughter Jamie Ketchum of Bradenton, Fla.; sister Helen Ketchum Matthews of Wayne, W.Va.; beloved niece, Elaine Young of Huntington W.Va.; grandchildren Charlie, Sissy, Kenny and Joey of Merritt Island, Fla., Matt and Lilly of Greensboro, N.C. and a special friend Jimmy Dow Wilson of Wayne, W.Va.

JAMES LEWIS STURGILL, SR., 72 years old, a disabled coal miner, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at his home following a long illness. He was born on November 27, 1940 in West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Okey Sturgell and Emma Vance, a son, James Lewis Sturgill Jr., five sisters, Alberta Hannah, Roberta Maynard, Phoebe Copley, Betty Smith and Virginia Helms as well as two brothers, Joe Sturgell and Gary David Sturgell. James is survived by his wife; Bessie (Messer) Sturgill, daughter, Paula (Robert) Brewer and son, Danny Joe (Lisa) Sturgill all of Kermit, WV; 12 brothers; Jude (Loretta) Vance, Joe (Tammy) Vance, Leonard (Linda) Vance, and Earl (Paula) Vance all of Kermit, WV, Tony Vance of Pataskala, OH, Sherman (Judy) Sturgell of Delbarton, WV, Charles and Okey Lee Sturgell of Crum, WV, Ivan (Sharon) Sturgell of Ohio, Albert, Harold (Bertha) and Jennings (Ollie) Sturgell of Ft. Gay, WV as well as 2 sisters, Alice (Roy) Messer and Minnie Fitzpatrick both of Kermit, WV. Seven Grandchildren, Jeremy Sturgill and Bradley (Barbara) Sturgill, Tyler (Chelsea) Sturgill, Kerry (LeAnn) Sturgill, Brock Chapman, Coltin and Briana Brewer all of Kermit, WV as well as Nicholas Newsome of Williamson, WV and seven great grandchildren, Braeden and Tanner Sturgill of Ft. Gay, WV, Arabella Sturgill of Crum, WV, Karter and Kooper Sturgill and Zoey and Joda Sturgill all of Kermit, WV. Funeral services were Monday, September 16, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield Chapel with Matthew Crum, Delbert Crum, and Keith Brumfield officiating. Burial followed in the Sturgill Cemetery on Marrowbone Creek road, Rt. 1 Kermit, WV. Visitation was from 6-10 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with special services at 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the care of the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, KY.

SAMUEL JULIAN VARNEY, 68, of Crum, W. Va., passed away early Sunday, September 15, 2013 at his home at Silver Creek, Crum, West Virginia. Born October 27, 1944 in Webb, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Luther Varney and Edna (Spaulding) Varney. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Donald L. Varney; and two sisters, Beulah Faye Parsley and JoAnn Varney. He is survived by his wife, Joanne (Bartoe) Varney; two sons, Brian Z. Varney of Huntington, West Virginia and Brandon E. Varney of Dunbar, West Virginia; one brother, Troy E. Varney of Crum, West Virginia; one sister, Betty Varney Edmunson of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He was a Member of the Crum Church of Christ and was an educator with the Wayne County Board of education for 34 years. He taught at Crum elementary and Dunlow elementary. He graduated from Crum High School, class of 1962. Julian attended David Lipscomb University and was a graduate of Glenville State College and Marshall University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1971 and served in Vietnam from November 1968 –November 1971. ROGER LYNN DUMMITT, 55, of Huntington died Wednesday morning, Sept. 18, 2013, at home. He was a retired barber. DREMA SUE THOMPSON MEALEY of Kenova, W.Va., a Christian by faith who loved her Lord with her whole heart and went to be with Him on Sunday, September 22, 2013. Drema was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend whose love and fellowship will be missed by all who knew her. She was a member of the Oakview Missionary Baptist Church where she not only attended but was a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Ladies Circle of Faith Class, and worked as the housekeeper for many, many years. She loved teaching and learning about God and His word and more importantly loved reading godly stories to her great-grandchildren. Heaven has gained a true Christian angel in Drema. CHARLES R. KIMBLER, 82, of Genoa, WV, died Tuesday September 24, 2013 at Huntington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Huntington. JANE KINSTLER NEAL, 90, died September 25, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband, George I. Neal Jr.; her parents, Labon T. Kinstler and Emmer Vaughn Kinstler; and two brothers, Labon T. "Dick" Kinstler Jr. and Frank Kinstler. As a child, she grew up in Kenova, W.Va., and graduated from Ceredo-Kenova High School. She was a talented singer, studying voice with local tutors, and by age 15 had her own local radio show. She went on to Marshall College, but left when she was appointed to work in Washington, D.C., for the FBI. Ultimately, she received a scholarship to study voice under Dorothy Remington Webster, a noted voice teacher in Washington, D.C. During War II she was commended by the Red Cross for her extensive volunteer work in singing to wounded servicemen in Walter Reed Army and Bethesda Naval Hospitals. She also studied voice and performed with the Washington Opera Guild. She was asked by a photographer to pose with poinsettias for a Christmas photo for The Washington Post. The picture was published on its front page and was picked up by the Associated Press and published in newspapers across America. This launched a separate career in modeling and fashion consulting. She was a graduate of the Barbizon School of Modeling in New York City. She returned to Huntington and was a legal secretary. At the same time, she was employed by WSAZ-TV as a host for her own noontime talk show. She interviewed such notables as Jackie Kennedy and Roger Williams. In addition she wrote and produced many women's fashion shows. She worked as the office manager for R.C. Wulfman M.D. Inc., a local anesthesiologist, before her retirement. Throughout her life she was a gourmet cook and shared that passion with many of her friends. Jane Neal was a kind person, who tried to help as many people as she could. She is survived by two nieces, Kay J. Kinstler and Lynda Elliott Conway; and a special nephew, Eugene M. LOWELL ELIZABETH WASSUM, 89, of Barboursville, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 29, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 2013, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Brent Yancey. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. She was born April 17, 1924, in Echo, W.Va., daughter of the late Fletcher and Eva Ferguson Workman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William K. Wassum, and two brothers, Newman and George Workman. During World War II she worked as a secretary for the officer's branch of the armed forces in Washington, D.C., and retired from C&P Telephone after thirty-six years of service. She is survived by one son, William R. Wassum and his wife Patricia of Fredricksburg, Va.; two daughters, Linda Mills and her husband Richard of Barboursville and Debra Wassum and her husband John Brady of Brooklyn, New York; one stepson, Donald Wassum of Teaneck, N.J.; one sister, Delores Rohrer of Rittman, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Richard H. Mills, Kate Wassum Pendo, Allison Wassum Nelson, James Wassum, Joshua Wassum, Jacob Wassum, Kim Wassum and Lynn Wassum. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville.

SADIE FRANCES HAZLETT, 71, of Prichard, W.Va., passed away Monday, September 30, 2013, at her home. She was born February 8, 1942, in Blackfork, W.Va., a daughter of the late Samuel and Nona McGuire Saunders. She was a caregiver and a homemaker. She was a member of Smith United Methodist Church and also a member of Eastern Star. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Arnold S. Hazlett; brothers Kenneth Saunders, Charles Saunders and Carmel Saunders; sister Faye Perry; nephew Michael Saunders and great-granddaughter Kennedy Hazlett. Survivors include two sons, Donald Hazlett of Huntington, W.Va., and Samuel Hazlett of Prichard, W.Va.; five granddaughters, Kristen Jude, Ashley Perry, Stephanie Scott and Cassandra Hazlett, all of Prichard, W.Va., and Magan Hazlett of Huntington, W.Va.; 11 great-grandchildren, Taylor Snow and Dalton Snow of San Diego, Calif., Axel Jude, Austin May, Audrey Perry, Madison Perry, Freelin Scott, Shelby Scott and Prezlee Scott, all of Prichard, W.Va., Braxton Davis and Tanna Damron of Huntington, W.Va. Also surviving is one sister, Fern and Randall "Randy" Kegley of Chillicothe, Ohio; and Paul Saunders of Kenova, W.Va.; one special nephew Jeff Saunders of Lavalette, W.Va., and niece April Jackson of Prichard, W.Va. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at Young Funeral Home Chapel, Louisa, Ky., with Rev. Dennis Ashworth officiating. Burial will follow at the Hazlett Cemetery, Prichard, W.Va. Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. Wednesday at Young Funeral Home Chapel.

JOHN RAYMOND SUTHERLAND, 73, of Kenova, W.Va., died Monday, September 30, 2013, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. He was born April 13, 1940, in Kenova, a son of the late William R. and Marcia Conger Sutherland. John was retired from the Wayne County Board of Education. He was active in C-K sports and was a past councilman and mayor for the City of Kenova. He is survived by his beloved wife Beulah Quertermous Sutherland; two sons, John M. Sutherland of Kenova and Mark A. Sutherland of St. Albans, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Eric Reese Sutherland and Kailey Brooke Sutherland. John taught for many years at Ferndale Elementary, where he was a much-loved teacher. He loved his family and will be deeply missed by them and all who knew him. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 2013, at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova. Funeral services will begin immediately following the visitation at 7 p.m. with Rev. LOIS JEAN BLEDSOE WINTERS, 77, of Ripley, W.Va., passed away on September 30, 2013, surrounded by her family. She had a long and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Lois was born on November 13, 1935, in Huntington, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Elba Moses "Doc" and Virginia Mae "Ginny" Bledsoe. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph B. "Ike" Bledsoe and David L. Bledsoe. She was a proud graduate of Wayne High School and Marshall University. She taught first grade at Ripley Elementary School before moving to Ripley Middle School where she retired after more than 30 years of service. Former students and fellow teachers shared many exciting and memorable moments in "Mrs. Winters" classroom. She loved teaching, and the classroom was her stage. After retirement she continued service to others as she provided care for her mother, her late brother "Ike" and friends. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Rod (Tammy) Winters and Roger (Jane) Winters; and her grandchildren, Zack, Spencer, Parker and Lauren. Lois was blessed with many wonderful friends and a caring family and many thanks are given to those who shared in her life. She loved living life through her grandchildren and nothing pleased her more than to see them all together. MARGARET KATHERINE VAN HOOSE, 90, passed away September 30, 2013, in Orlando, Fla. Mrs. Van Hoose was born November 11, 1922, in Ceredo, W.Va., to the late Andy and Lucy Dixon Maynard. During WWII, Margaret worked for Sylvania Electric in Huntington, W.Va., and also worked as a front line supervisor at Zayres in Casselberry, Fla. Margaret enjoyed crocheting and reading, and most of all spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Spencer. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Holbert " Van" Van Hoose of Orlando, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Marti Van Hoose of Deltona, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Gary Underwood of Deland, Fla.; grandchildren, Mark Spencer of Alaska, Van Spencer (Jaina) of Atlanta, Ga., Becky Fields (Jeff) of Orlando, Fla., and Jeremy Sloan of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Stacie, Raquel and Justin; and sister, Ruth Wilson (Gene) of Texas. FRED DANIEL McCLOUD, 71, of Lavalette, W.Va., husband of Carroll Vivian Sadler McCloud, died Monday, September 30, 2013, at his home. He was born August 28, 1942, in Red Jacket, W.Va., a son of the late Daniel Boone and Thelma Elaine Lester McCloud. He was an insurance salesman with Nationwide Insurance. He attended the Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers. Other survivors include three sons and one daughter-in-law, Steven (Melissa) McCloud of Chesapeake, Ohio, Jeffrey McCloud of Lavalette and Kevin McCloud of Milton, W.Va.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Elizabeth Hope Hatcher of New Mexico, Pat (Joe) Hager of Sissonville, W.Va., and Sharon (Gary) Coberly of Cleveland, Ohio; two grandchildren, Logan and Darby McCloud of Chesapeake, Ohio; sisters-in-law Inice (Donald) Vance of Logan, W.Va., and Patricia Graham of Huntington, W.Va.; and brother-in-law, Darrell Sadler of Huntington.
