JOHNNIE STAFFORD, 66, of Fort Gay passed away Friday, November 1, 2013 at Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa, KY. He was born November 5, 1948 in Nolen, WV. a son of the late Lewis Johnson and Sylvia Stafford. He was a truck driver for the teamsters, member of the Church of Jesus Christ, and a Korea Army Veteran. Surviving is his wife; Teresa Ann Edwards Stafford of Fort Gay, Daughters; Patricia Sanders of Fort Gay, Chrystal Workman of Louisa, KY., and Rebecca Caudill of Fort Gay, son; Charles Young of Somerset, KY., brothers; Joseph Johnson, Ishmael Johnson, and Malen Johnson all of Fort Gay, WV., sisters; Hope Adams of Beckley, WV., and Sylvia Faul of Tennessee, Grandchildren; Amber Nicole Sanders, Brynnley Madison Caudill, Hailey Grace Workman, and Sebastian Young. Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Monday at Young Funeral Home Chapel with Joseph Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the Church of God in Christ Jesus Cemetery in Fort Gay. Young Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
ROWENA TURLEY NAPIER, 73, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Monday, November 4, 2013, at Rose Terrace Health and Rehab Center, Culloden, W.Va. Rowena retired from Marshall University with 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Landon VonDuben. Rowena is survived by two daughters, Babette Napier and Terry Case of Barboursville, W.Va., and Carol and Rob Thacker of Barboursville, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Michael and Tiffany Felix VonDuben, Jessica Napier Evans and Donald, and Caitlin Thacker; and two great-grandchildren, Laykin VonDuben and Cecellia Enochs. JOHN WYMAN GRAVES, 89, of Ceredo, W.Va., passed away on November 4, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted at the Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Spring Valley Memorial Gardens with full military honors performed by the American Legion Post 93 of Kenova, W.Va., and the U.S. Army. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at the funeral home. He was born on August 26, 1924, in Middletown, Conn., a son of Harold and Mildred Graves. John joined the Army in 1942 in State College, Pa. He trained as an Aviation Cadet and then trained as a Rifleman and Cannoneer and was assigned to Co. C, 397th Infantry, of the 100th Infantry Division on the Seventh Army Front in the European Theater in World War II. He specialized in the carbine and used hand-to-hand fighting techniques and received the Combat Infantry Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. John married Necia Ann Carleton, who preceded him in death, but together they had eight children who survive him, Gary (Dee) Graves, Greg (Jeana) Graves, Kathy (Bruce) Fisher, Emily (Dave) Hoschar, Beth Maynard, Sarah (Brian) Lester, Brenda Graves and John "Chip" (Andrea) Graves. Also surviving is his brother, Daniel Graves of Portland, Ore.; and fifteen grandchildren, Cam, Kirk, Jeff, Steven, David, Rachel, Nathan, Jamie, Jeremy, Chris, Anne Marie, Jonathan, Laura, Julia and Daniel; and 10 great-grandchildren with one on the way. LILLIE FRANCIS HESSON, 67, of Lavalette, WV, passed away Monday, November 4, 2013 at Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Huntington. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2013 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, with Brother Jerry Casteel and Brother Jesse Adkins officiating. Burial will follow at Community Memorial Gardens at Wayne. She was born January 5, 1946 at East Lynn, daughter of the late Oscar Thomas and Lula Mae Cornett Francis. She was a retired teacher with the Wayne County School system and was a member of the Laurel Freewill Baptist Church. A brother, Carl W. Francis, and her husband’s parents, Tom and Hilda Jo Hesson, also preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Robert Dale Hesson; five brothers, Tom Francis (Stella) of Lavalette, WV, Dan Francis (Gladys) and Fred Francis (Brenda), all of Wayne, WV, Larry Francis (Mary) of Marion, OH, and John Francis of Dallas, TX; two brothers-in-law, Thomas Duke Hesson (Marsha) of Statesville, NC and Phil Hesson (Kay) of Chesapeake, OH; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Daniels of Chesapeake, OH and Virginia Francis of Dallas, TX; and a host of special nieces, nephews and church family. JAMES ALFRED HALE, 63, of Knoxville, TN., formerly of Huntington and Kenova, WV passed away on Monday, Nov. 4, 2013 at his residence. James was born on March 17, 1950 in Huntington, WV the son of the late Charles Alfred and Mary Marie Booth Hale. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in Vietnam. He was a plumber. He is survived by his wife Rhoda Ann Jonas Hale, son: James Hale Jr. and two step sons Brian and Charles Siegle. One daughter Misty Peyton and many grand children and family. EFFIE M. MILLS, 85, of Proctorville, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at home. She was born January 4, 1928, in East Lynn, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her parents Millard and Letha Merritt and one sister Agnes Sanders. Effie is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Elmer Mills, and five sisters, Ethel Osburn, Goldie Gilbert, Margaret McNeely, Jewel Thompson and Jean Bryan; and a host of nieces and nephews. Effie was a member of First Baptist Church of Proctorville, Ohio. Effie graduated from Marshall University, starting her teaching career in Wayne County, W.Va., and retiring from Chesapeake (Ohio) Elementary in 1983. Effie was also a lifetime member of Ohio Retired Teachers Association and a member of Lawrence County Retired Teachers. Effie handled the disease of Alzheimer's with dignity and grace that could only come from her Lord and Savior. The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers who helped enable Effie to stay at home with her beloved Elmer. WILMA J. KAREFF, 72, of Bellville, OH, formerly of Wayne, WV, went to be with the Lord Thursday, November 7, 2013. funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the Morris funeral Home Chapel, Wayne. Burial will follow at Smith Cemetery, Beech fork. Born May 2, 1941 in Beech fork, WV, she was the daughter of Rev. Earl and Pheobe (Miller) Smith. Wilma had been a Mansfield area resident for over 30 years. She was a good Christian woman and an inspiration to many. She is loved and will be missed by her family. Wilma was a member of the People’s Baptist Church in Mansfield, OH. Surviving are daughters, Theresa (Rodney) Parker and Donita Bilbee all of Mansfield, Ohio and Dietra (Robert) Sprague of Sunbury, OH; seven grandchildren, Rebecca, Vanessa, Jennifer, Stephanie, Danielle, Kiersten, and Phoebe; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Eunice Hatton and edie Skeens, both of Wayne, WV, and Flo Ratcliff of Beech fork, WV; brothers, Cletis Smith and Charles Smith, both of Beech fork, WV, and Sherman Owen Smith of Barboursville, WV. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Robert Kareff, who passed in 2008. Friends may call from noon until service time on Sunday. MR. HOMER MORRIS FRY "THE DEACON", 84, of Huntington, widower of Eileen Stiltner Fry, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Funeral services will be conducted noon Monday, November 11, 2013, at the Huntington United Baptist Church, 11th avenue at 17th street, with Revs. O. F. Adkins, Phillip Warren, Kim Stone, and Greg Lucas officiating. Burial will be in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. Homer was born November 18, 1928 in Wayne County, W.Va., the son of Harkins and Sylvia Sellards Fry. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded ion death by 3 sisters, Zona Kerns, Eloise Weakland, Lela Mae Lucas, and a brother, Leonard Frye. He attended Huntington High School and Marshall University, and was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force serving during the Korean War. He was owner of Singer Electronics, Fry's Electronics and worked at Dan Ferguson Music for 36 years. He was a member of the Huntington United Baptist Church since 1956, where he served as deacon, teacher, treasurer and song/choir leader. He was a member of several Southern Gospel groups including 33 years with the Gospel Harmony Boys and served as EMCEE for both on stage and their television program. He has been a member of The Guardians of Chillicothe, Ohio for the last 12 years. Military graveside honors will be given by Veterans Honor Guard Post 16. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Melody Fry Davis and Doyle "Dave" Davis, and Kimberly Fry, all of Huntington; grandsons, Clark (Krystle) Davis, and Christopher Davis and an aunt "Special Sister", Juanita Frazier. The family would like to express their special thanks to the J. Robert Pritchard Dialysis Center at Cabell-Huntington Hospital, his good friend Dr. Zeid J. CARL JOHNSON VARNEY, SR., 87, of Ravenswood, WV, went to be with the Lord, Friday, November 8, 2013, at Ravenswood Care Center, Ravenswood, following an extended illness. He was born December 19, 1925, in Crum, Wayne County, WV, a son of the late Thomas and Ruth (Prince) Varney. His brothers, Oscar, Robert, William and Homer Varney, and a sister, Ruby Koontz, also preceded him in death. He was a retired slitter operator in the finishing department from Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation and was a member of United Steelworkers Union, Local #5668. He served in United States Army during WWII in the European Theatre and was a Purple Heart recipient. He attended the First Baptist Church, Ravenswood, and was 50 year member of Jewell Lodge #140, AF & AM, Crum, WV. He enjoyed gardening and carpentry work and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Shannon) Varney; son, Carl J. Varney, Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Vienna; daughters, Venisa Flesher and her husband, Jeff, Gloria Ann Blackhurst, Connie Reynolds and her husband, Earl Lee, all of Ravenswood; sister, Mary Perdue of Huntington; grandchildren, Steven and Craig Blackhurst, Terra and Sara Varney, Anna and Nathanael Flesher, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Service will be 7 p.m. Monday, November 11, 2013, at the Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Ravenswood, WV, with Pastor Mark Gerstell officiating. CHARLOTTE ANN ROPPEL, 69, of Huntington, wife of Roger Roppel, passed away Friday, November 8, 2013 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Tuesday at the Reger Funeral Chapel by Pastor Keith Wiebe. Burial will follow in Spring Valley Memory Gardens, Huntington. She was born November 7, 1944 in Canton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Earl and Helen Claypool. She was a homemaker. Charlotte was a member of Grace Gospel Church for 32 years and was active in the Ladies Missionary Fellowship. In addition to her husband she is also survived by two sons John Roppel of Kenova, WV and David Roppel of Phoenix, AZ. and her brothers and sisters. NANNIE MAE JOHNSON BALL, 95, of Fort Gay, passed away Saturday, November 9, 2013 at her home. She was born May 26, 1918 in Glenhayes, W.V. a daughter of the late Mason and Evaline James Johnson. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Truman Ball; brothers, Frank, James Willie, and Wayne Johnson; Survivors include children, Delores Stephens of Norfolk, Va.; Billie Spangler of Glenhayes, W.V.; Nancy Moore of Va. Beach, Va., David Ball of Gerradstown, W.V.; 14 Grandchildren; 19 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great-Grandchild. LAWRENCE RAY BELLOMY, 45, of Huntington passed away on November 10, 2013 at his home. He was born on July 2, 1968; the only son of Charles and Marva Hensley Bellomy. Larry was preceded in death by his father but leaves behind to mourn his loss his devoted mother and sisters: Kelli Bellomy (Bernie) and Tonia Lands (Mickeal). Also surviving are nephew Eric Bellomy and niece Amanda Dillon and great-niece Lacey Pack, Uncle Jack Hensley and Larry’s canine child, Jade aka "Pink". Larry loved to play his guitar in the Dysfunctional Theory Band with other family members and was a songwriter and a computer technician. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 1 PM at the Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home with Minister John Holland officiating with burial to follow at Davis Cemetery in Prichard, WV. ROBERT JOSEPH HOOKER, 52, of Beavercreek, Ohio, died Nov. 10, 2013, in the VA Medical Center, Dayton, Ohio. He retired from the U.S. Air Force. BARBARA JEAN "BOBBIE" COPLEY (nee Maynard), 71, formerly of Lavalette, W.Va., passed away November 12, 2013, in Medina, Ohio. Beloved wife of Raymond for 52 years. Devoted mother of Kimberly (Duane Trabert). Sister of Delsie Proctor (Mason), Jimmie Maynard (Clercie), Dorothy Corbissero, Mary Louise Sargent (Clarence), and the late Carl Maynard and Norma Sue Wiley. Also survived by her special brother-in-law Terry Wiley and special sister-in-law Carol Perry. Loving aunt to many. Bobbie loved her grand-dogs Misty and Rocky. Preceding her in death was her husband of 57 years, Thomas Reed Davis; a sister, Ruth Adkins Thomas; and a brother, Harold Adkins. She is survived by her daughters, Myrna (Bill) McKendree and Devona (Dr. L. Frank "Tex") Frye; five grandchildren, Brian (Kellye) McKendree, Christine (Jeff) Minor, Rebecca (Mike) Guilliams, Leslie (Richie) McNiel and Eric (Amelia) Frye; and nine great-grandchildren, Evan and Ellie McKendree, Rachel and Kate Minor, Benjamin and Molly Guilliams, Sophie and Rylee McNiel and Michael Frye. She was also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend, Betty Miller. Iona had been a member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years and particularly enjoyed the Pennington Sunday School Class. For most of her life she was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, sewing and studying the Bible. MR. CHARLES ODELL PORTER SR., of Hamptonville, N.C., passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C. He was born February 14, 1948, in Wayne County, West Virginia. He was raised by his parents, Waldo Ray Adkins and Virginia Lee Zirkle Adkins. He was a loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved each of his grandchildren, and they meant the world to him. Mr. Porter was owner and operator of Dell and Sons Painting Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Vietnam War for two tours. Because of injuries while in active service, Mr. Porter was a Disabled American Veteran. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Desiree Ann Staley; a brother, Waldo Ray Adkins Jr.; a sister-in-law, Sun Cha Porter; and his mother-in-law, Cleo S. Willard. Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Patricia W. Porter of the home; his children, Charles Odell Porter Jr., and wife Liz of Seattle, Wash., Kelly Gregory of the home, Angela D. Gregory of Elkin, N.C.; Nancy L. DOROTHY ANN POSTEN NEW, widow of Homer U. New, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at the Springfield Ohio Masonic Home. Visitation will be at Wilson Funeral Home, Louisa, Ky on Saturday November 16, 2013 from 5-7 pm. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 pm Sunday November 17, 2013 at Big Hurricane Missionary Baptist Church, Fort Gay, WV with Pastor Tony Perry officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn cemetery in Louisa, Ky. Dorothy was born April 8, 1919 in Morgantown, WV, a daughter of the late Curtis Thornton Posten and Nell Rebecca Posten. After her husband of fifty six years retired, they moved back to his hometown of Kenova. She was a member of the Kenova United Methodist Church where she sang in the Senior Choir. Her life was devoted to her family, to being a Girl Scout leader, teaching children in Sunday School, playing her piano for her churches and volunteering many years at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Dorothy loved people and was devoted to her church and bible studies. Surviving are three daughters; Judy Brinson (Bob) of Charleston South Carolina, Sally Mizerik of Ceredo, WV and Laura Schmitt (Jeff) of Springfield, Oh. Two sons; H. P. "Corky" New of Prichard, WV and Curtis A. New (Debbie) of Lewisburg, Ohio. One brother, Charles L. Posten of Liberty , W.V. Nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by two brothers, David Posten of Kanawha City, WV and Donald Posten of California and a daughter in law, "Peggie" New of Prichard, WV. BILLY JOE LEVERING, 52, of Louisa, Ky., passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at his home. He was born February 18, 1961 in East Lynn, W.V. a son of the late Albert and Minnie Merritt Levering. He attended Garden Of Hope Church. Survivors include, one daughter, Nicole Gannon of Louisa, Ky.; three brothers, Bob Levering, Jerry Levering, and Kevin Levering all of Louisa, Ky.; four grandchildren, Anthony Gannon Jr.; Zachary Conatser, Alexis Conatser and Krista Conatser. Graveside service will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Kelly Cemetery, Camp Creek, East Lynn, W.V. with Rev. Darrell Ratliff officiating. BILLY DALE WEBB, 79, of Genoa, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord and reunite with his twin brother Bobby and his very special nephew Randall Mac on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. Billy was a retired union laborer and avid farmer. He was born February 20, 1934, in Wayne County, West Virginia, a son of the late Johnny and Nellie Watts Webb. His brother Wayne Webb and sister Julia Willis also preceded him in death. Billy is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Matthews Webb; three children, Roger Webb and his wife Yvonne, Donna Lucas, and Teresa Brown, and son-in-law, Carlos Cyrus; three grandchildren, Justin Webb, Kris Cyrus and his wife Elizabeth, and Robin Cyrus; four great-grandchildren, Bella, Lily, Jasmine and Jayden. BETTY LEE BARBOUR, 84 of Kenova, W.Va., member of the Kenova Church of God, left this world on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, bound for Heaven. ELEANOR "PETE" STONE, February 11th, 1931 - November 18th, 2013, a resident of El Cerrito, California, formerly of Huntington, W.Va., known to many as Pete, was born in Wayne County, West Virginia on February 11th, 1931. At the age of 19, Pete found the love of her life, Charles Hugh Stone, and on September 21st, 1950, the two said their "I dos". They shared a bond that lasted 63 years. For years, Pete and Charlie mentored young couples focusing on Christian marriages and an abundance of love, guidance and support. A mother figure to all, her courage, strength, and eagerness to help others were something that was truly admired. In 2006, Pete was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Her long fight finally came to an end and although she will be missed, her joy and high spirits will continue to be in each and every one of us forever. He was born April 21, 1922 in Wilsondale, WV. Eugene was a retired letter carrier for the US Postal Service. He was a retired Chief Petty Officer from the US Navy having served in WWII and the Korean War. Eugene saw action in six major battles in the South Pacific during his time in the Navy. He was a member of the American Legion Post 93 of Kenova, WV and the Howard P. Hall VFW Post 1064 of Huntington. Eugene was also a member of the Madison Avenue Christian Church and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his father Reuben Damron, his mother and step father Reba Marcum Smith and Marlin Smith; his wife Velma Marie Lafon Damron; a son James R. Ritter and two sisters Bernice Stowers and Ermma "Sis" Ramey. He was born on January 5, 1935 in Kiahsville, WV, to the late Lindsey Adkins and Haney Adkins. In addition to his parents, Lindsey was preceded in death by his wife Arizona Lucas Adkins, 5 brothers Clifford, Walter, Clyde, Dennis and Winford and 3 sisters Pearl, Opal, and Nannie Mae. Surviving is his daughters Patricia Joy Sanchez of Cleveland, Ohio, and Pamela Gale Adkins of Las Vegas, Nevada, son James Edward Adkins of Cleveland Ohio, sister Joanne Moon (Ronnie) of Lodi Ohio, brothers James Adkins of Ranger and Willard Adkins of Ohio. BUS "Kin" PERRY, 84, of Prichard, W.Va., passed peacefully from this life at his home on Friday, November 29, 2013. He was born September 27, 1929 in Wayne County, West Virginia, a son of the late John and Siddie Moore Perry. Bud was also preceded in death by five brothers and one sister, Roy, Frennie, Tom, Jesse Fox, Harry, and his sister Hazel. He retired from Aristec Corporation in 1992 with 31 years of service. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Martha Blankenship Perry; three sons, Marvin Blankenship of Huntington, W.Va., John Dale Perry (Debbie) of Flatwoods, Ky., and Dennis James Perry at home; one daughter, Hazel Anita Perry of Kenova, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Allen Blankenship of Wayne, W.Va., John Michael Perry of Ashland, Ky., Cameron Douglas Perry of Flatwoods, Ky., and Matthew Gene Roy of Proctorville, Oh.; and several great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Dicie Ann Thompson of Genoa, W.Va.; and a brother John Bill Perry of Radnor, W.Va., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2013 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Pastor Ted Williamson officiating. Burial followed in the John Perry Cemetery, Genoa. ARNOLD ALVIN CASTO, 89, of Wayne, WV, went to meet his savior, Jesus Christ Saturday, November 30, 2013 at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Fred Ferguson. He was born December 16, 1923 in Fairplain, WV, a son of the late Melvin and Orpha Pearl Shamblin Casto. Arnold was a member of the Wayne Baptist Church where he served as a teacher and deacon. He was a retired school teacher for Wayne County Schools and was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran. He served the community in many ways, among them being a volunteer firefighter, EMT and paramedic for the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department. He was well known in Wayne as a good neighbor, always ready to help anyone in need. His wife, Mary Don Boswell Casto also preceded him in death, along with a son, David Arnold Casto and a brother, Loren Casto. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Schullek and husband, Frank of Columbus, OH, Mary Ellen Ray and husband, David of Wayne, WV; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Cassida; a brother, Jennings Keith Casto and wife, Betty of Kenna, WV; eleven grandchildren Matthew Schullek, Jennifer Lawrence and husband, John, Jessica Schullek, Amanda Alverson and husband, Austin, Jeanette Mills and husband, Kevin, Jacob Ray and wife, Julie, Katie Ray, Samuel Ray, Alex Beale and wife, Lisa, Judson Casto and Sophia Casto; seven great-grandchildren, John Lawrence, III, Justin Lawrence, Macie Alverson, Quentin Mills, Callie Mills, Hannah Ray and Hunter Ray; a host of nieces and nephews and two wonderful caretakers, Catherine Epling and Linda McMillian. JANE ELIZABETH OSBURN, 44 of Prichard, WV passed away on November 30, 2013 at her home. She was born August 24, 1969 in Huntington, WV; the only daughter of Joseph Anthony Ventura and LaVada Ruth Butler. Jane is survived by her mother, LaVada, and her aunts and uncles: Patricia (Rich) Hofmeister, Linda (David) Hatten, Billy Stambaugh, and Diane (Howard) Henry. Also surviving are many cousins, friends, and loving animals. He was born July 17, 1950 in Wayne County, WV a son of the late John and Mary Alice Vance McCloud. A sister, Plynia Roberta McCloud and a brother, Delbert Noris McCloud, also preceded him in death. He worked formerly for the Wayne Saw Mill. Survivors include: four children, Billy J.
