PATRICIA ANN QUEEN CHAPMAN passed peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Oct. 19, 2015. A private burial for family only will take place Saturday at Arlington Cemetery, Sandy Springs, Georgia. A celebration of her life for friends and family will take place before the end of the year. Pat was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, James Earl Chapman; her parents, Arlie Queen and Marjorie Mullens Queen; as well as a stepmother, Lillian Lycan Queen, all of West Virginia. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Holly Chapman Abbott (Jeff), of Warner Robins, Georgia; son, James Christopher Chapman (Terri), of Duluth, Georgia; grandsons, James Matthew Chapman and Michael McComas Chapman, of Atlanta; wonderful, longtime friends in Sandy Springs, Marietta and Norcross, Georgia, as well as in the numerous other places she lived. Pat was born on Feb. 7, 1934, in Philadelphia, and spent her formative years as a proud city girl in the suburb of Bristol, where her father was a manager at McCrory Stores. During her adolescence her parents’ deep roots and extended family made them decide to move back to West Virginia to the small town of Wayne, where they ran several successful businesses for many decades, including Queen’s Department Store: Doing Business on the Square. Life was no longer so glamorous, a step back in time. Then, her mother passed from cancer, which affected her deeply. But Pat developed lasting friendships and worked in her dad’s store with an eye to taking it over one day and had a real talent for management. She enrolled in Marshall University and, although a good student, she also enjoyed dating, parties and sorority life. Then she was swept off her feet by the dashing and charismatic Jim Chapman. Jim became a marketing executive with IBM and the couple married and had Holly and Chris. Jim’s job required him to move often, and the family lived in Indianapolis, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., New Jersey, Connecticut, Cincinnati and finally Atlanta in 1976. These were the Mad Men days of cocktail and dinner parties, and Pat and Jim were at the center, often breaking out the bongo drums and ukulele around midnight. Pat’s passion became cooking; her idol, Julia Child. She owned every issue of Gourmet magazine ever published and leaves an entire bedroom of cookbooks and recipes for her kids, who have inherited her love of cooking. When Jim took early retirement, the couple traveled extensively to Europe, Asia and Latin America and even took the QEII and the Concorde. They went out for a light lunch each day together and raced each other to complete the New York Times crossword puzzle. (She also beat the entire family at the Sunday edition.) Jim’s death in 2003 was devastating, but Pat rebuilt her life, buying her own new town home, learning to manage and invest her money and (sort of) learning to use a computer and cellphone. Her resilience during the final phase of her life when she suffered medical problems was astonishing. A doctor who had performed major surgery on her twice ran into her and declared, "I can’t believe you’re still here!" Pat was the quint-essential southern lady: always dressed to the nines, coiffed and made up. She took great care of herself and she took great care of us. Pat had a special place in her heart for Toys for Tots. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring her with a generous donation to www.toysfortots.org.
