, 91, of Wayne, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2016 at home. The son of the late Dan and Sallie Finley Browning, he was born in Williamson, WV on December 31, 1924. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Todd Browning. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Jeanetta Velna Arrowood Browning; his daughter, Arthetta Jane Browning of Lavalette and his son and daughter-in-law, John Richard (Ric) and Beverly Jane Napier Browning of Wayne. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Michael Jackson Taylor and wife Jeanette, of Wayne; Sara Beth Queen and husband Jamison, of Cincinnati, OH; and Jessica Anne Hilton and husband Ben, of Utica, OH; and seven great-grandchildren, Abigail Grace Taylor; John William (Will) and Laura Lea Queen; and Annabeth Brady, Benjamin Rex, Thomas Browning, and Hazel Jo Hilton. A World War II veteran, he proudly served in the Navy on board the USS Crowley, which he was with during its construction, launch, service overseas and, finally, its decommission after the war. He returned from service in 1946 to marry his high school sweetheart, whose lock of hair he carried with him while overseas and continued to carry in his wallet for the remainder of his life, and to raise his family. He owned and operated several local businesses and served as a Wayne County magistrate for 17 years until his retirement. Up until his recent illness, he loved to spend his mornings out loafing around Wayne and puttering around in his garage amongst his vast and varied collection of parts, tools, and general miscellanea. He enjoyed drinking a Coke or two, eating treats he stashed in various places around all of his hangouts, watching races on tv, his weekly Jim’s dinners, and listening to some Pioneer football on the radio on Friday nights. Most of all, he unconditionally adored his wife, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and told everyone he came into contact with about his family, his greatest source of pride, even after he struggled to communicate due to the effects of multiple strokes. He was incredibly generous, he was unflatteringly kind, and he was one of a kind. To say that he will be missed is an understatement of vast proportions. The family would like to thank nurse Rosie White for her exceptionally kind and compassionate care. They would also like to extend their gratitude to hospice nurses Sandy Smith and Missy Brooks, as well as the entire hospice staff. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 12 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, with Danny Damron officiating, with interment following at Elmwood Cemetery. Gladys was a homemaker, dedicating herself to raising her children, grandchildren, and caring for others. She was a spirit filled gospel singer, singing in the ministry for nearly 50 years of her life and traveling many miles in the service of God. Gladys has touched many lives with her singing and her dedication to serving God. One of her most memorable testimonies is that she dedicated her life to God while digging potatoes in her garden, a testimony that has been a blessing to all who knew her and proof that God will forgive and come into your heart at any place, under any circumstance, if you only ask. This one single testimony has blessed many. Gladys was a member of the Laurel Freewill Baptist Church. She was truly a faithful Servant and will be missed by all who knew her here on earth and welcomed with open arms by our Savior and many loved ones gone before her in Heaven. Heaven’s Choir is now so much sweeter. Proverbs: 31:28-31 "Her children arise up, and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excelleth them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates". Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Rev.
